Form 1s Returned for "Multi" SBR

Post by j1mmyd »

Got all excited when I saw something from DOJ in the mail (can't believe I said that) yesterday, only to be disappointed that they kicked my SBR Form 1 back for "Multi".

Now, I'd done enough research to learn that they only approve discrete calibers and I put "5.56mm" in that field. My mistake was in listing another upper for .300AAC under "Additional description". My thinking wast that if the additional upper was listed on the approved form that I'd be less likely to be challenged by any overly officious Johnny Law I might encounter. They still consider this to be Multi...

Silly me. Less truly is more. Turned the new paperwork around same day...

The good news is that this is said to mean I'm about 2 weeks shy of approval. I wonder how the criminals do it... ;)

yep, for new forms you can list one, and only one caliber in that box. ATF has said, you can swap as you wish as long as you retain the ability to configure the SBR into the configuration that is listed on the form. You need not have the parts with you.

ATF has said...
ATF "said", as in you have a copy of a letter somewhere? Or "said", as in you heard someone said they heard it?

I like to keep very small photocopies of relevant ATF letters, such as the one about AFGs on AR pistols.

Just called back and I'm pending final approval, which should mean a week or so. It was mailed on Jan 17, not December like I'd said above. Assuming all goes well, it'll be ~6 months.
