Well "Patient Zero" (as I see you have resurrected more dead threads than an infected bite), you statements were a bit unclear, but I gather you're talking about regulating the use of firearms...

Um... No.

This is a GUN FORUM... we do not believe in over regulating ANY firearms. The laws are fairly clear at this point, and bringing even more regulations would stop neither crime, nor kill-crazy idjuts.

All the recent crimes with firearms have occurred in:
- Gun Free Zones (IE: Schools, Malls, Government Controlled locations, etc)
- High Crime Areas (IE: Criminals ALREADY break the law)

And most of us believe that having people carry firearms MORE often may actually STOP these events, as concealed Handgun Permit holders statistically commit LESS crime than COPS!

So on that aspect, we appreciate the ramblings "Lazarus", but know your audience. Thanks!

Some restrictions are a good thing! HOLD ON! I say that cause of the "hold my beer" and "watch this" and "i got an idea" types out there. Some people cant even use roman candles responsibly, i shudder to think of them with a howitzer or tactical nuke! I will admit the thought of owning a S.A.W. is enough to make me a bit delirous.

The problem with restriction is drawing the line on them. And, it seems that once the line exists, it gets moved, and never moved in our favor.

I'm an absolutist when it comes to the 2nd Amendment. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights were written on the heels of a war in which the existing government had just been overthrown. It is clear that the primary purpose of the 2nd is to keep the government in check. Thus, we should be able to possess any weapon that is available, up to, including, and greater than nuclear firepower.

The US has nuclear firepower, as do other nations. I find it silly to say, on one hand, that our government lies to us, steals from us, cheats us, and spies on us, and cannot be trusted. Then say, on the other hand that only the government can possess certain weapons and that they should decide what weapons we are limited to.

I contemplated joining CFRRCU (Citizens For Responsible Roman Candle Usage) but the rules for membership were just too restrictive for me...
Now is the time for all good men to get off their rusty dustys...

Roman Candles don't kill people, drunk rednecks do... usually themselves, usually on video, and usually saying "Hey Ya'll! WATCH THIS!"

(sigh) Loves mah people, but sometimes they act a danged fool...

Just don't be shooting at me or mine and observe the quiet hours please. Otherwise, carry on and try to keep all shells and impacts on your own property.

If I could have an RPG I would. When Skynet becomes self-aware, it will be useful in fighting the machines.

I've had a similar line of thinking regarding this 'where to draw the line.' There was a guy in Australia a few years ago blogging about a cruise missile he was building in his garage, using off the shelf parts. Not sure what happened to his project, but I seem to recall there was no law against it.

Let's look at a couple different categories of 'ordinance':

Small arms -- have always been produced by hobbyists / machinists, and most recently by 3D printing enthusiasts. It is getting easier than ever to produce a gun yourself.

Explosives -- readily improvised, as we all know, using commonly available materials. Didn't some kid make a fissible device for his science fair project some years back?

Missiles -- my guess is the shoulder-launched variety are already in the hands of some enthusiasts, and / or some website exists with plans on how to build one. See the comment about the cruise missile above. What if all of the hobbyists turned their attention from building quadra-copters and model rockets into missiles? People have already sent their iPhones up to the edge of space, for heaven's sake.

Lasers -- to my mind, this will eclipse the OP's question about heavy ordnance. DEW's currently need quite a large power supply...but once again, there is already a budding hobby market brewing. Guys are building lasers in their garages using industrial / scientific parts that can burn through a lot more than cardboard.

The US and Australian governments leaned on him to take the plans down. I don't know if he still built it. The warhead wasn't very big (~10lbs IIRC), but enough to do some damage. Very simple to build if you have any UAV knowledge.

Just had a scary thought: In a world where the military, various gub'mint agencies, and a lot of private companies (even pizza delivery outfits) have drones zipping around US airspace, might it not get sorta hard to know which package was carrying 2-3 pounds of plastic explosive and dispatched by Al Qaeda? Even if there is a strict IFF protocol for them, how hard would it be to hijack the pizza guy?
