That guy at the restaurant seemed real happy though. He actually looked thrilled. Last time I OC'd before that was in Perceville and I thought one red neck looking guy's eyes were going to fall out. Maybe it was the way we were dressed. We were biking that day - bicycles - and dressed accordingly. If your a road biker you know the drill and it do look strange with a .45 cocked and locked in an IWB....Vahunter wrote:My wife got some strange looks and stupid comments at Food Lion the other day when she OC'd.

Hasn't happened to me yet and I've been open carrying for years. Fredericksburg, Richmond, points in between and all around. Not ONE person has ever said anything negative. The worst thing I've ever heard was "Is that a Colt?"Cartoon wrote:Will you eventually get a concealed permit! Good luck and congrats!
The LEO's I've encountered..same thing. Really no reaction at all.

I did not know you could openly carry a gun without being a police officer or in the service. So let me make sure I understand. I can buy a handgun and holster and wear it openly, but can't have it under a shirt or in my purse without a concealed weapon permit? But I don't need any kind of permit to have it in the open in public? Stores? btw I shop at Ferry farm walmart too. so Hi Neighbor! I don't have a gun yet but want to get one. My mailbox and paper box were 'torched' last weekend and I am so glad the fire did not spread into the woods and my home!!! I used to feel safe here but I felt very 'violated' and shaken by this. Sooo I need a handgun. I used to shoot cans off the fence and target shoot when I was growing up with my Dad, but nothing since. So advice is appreciated. I saw good things online about Glock 17 9mm. Is that 'adequate'? or what? Money is an issue also.

You are correct in that you can buy a handgun and holster and wear it openly without a permit. There are limits concerning where you are allowed to carry a firearm, there are differences for open carry and concealed carry. Courts, schools, most federal property, and all posted private property are off limits. Posted private property includes stores and you may be asked to leave even if there is not a "no guns" sign at the doors. There is a link on the left of this page under Resources called "Code of Virginia," it links to VA firearm laws.skb wrote:I did not know you could openly carry a gun without being a police officer or in the service. I openly carried for the first time last night. I got a few stares and I think I ran one couple out of the resteraunt, but no one said anything negative to me. It does feel weird carrying at first but I'm getting used to both open and concealed carry. (and yes I have a CHP)

Re: First Open Carry Today
I had a very positive encounter with a young lady, maybe not a classic "soccer mom" but pretty close, since I last posted. I've known her for years, but she had no idea I carry a gun,(other than hunting) until she saw me open carrying a few days ago. That led to a discussion about guns, carry, and her saying she might be interested in learning to shoot, and getting her CHP, and a carry gun.
Will she? Frankly I doubt it. Nothing wrong with that, but she at least has a positive view of carrying now. I'm sure she wasn't an "anti" to begin with, I know her husband also and know him to be a hunter and a shooter, but obviously she had given little if any thought to carrying a gun, or why a person would do it.
A chance to educate.

I agree we need to educate more people as to when and why we carry. Most people think if you carry a gun, concealed or open that you want to start a gun fight and that just isn't so. Moccasin is working hard at getting me more used to carrying both ways. Concealed isn't so bad since most people can't tell you have it but the open carry comes with a lot of looks! That will take more time to get used to.

Re: First Open Carry Today
I need to practice OC more often but its a lot harder to do here in NOVA. I consider it an invitation for confrontation with citizens and LE. Even yesterday carrying a rifle case to and from my truck drew a jaw-dropped stare from one of the neighbors. It was more effective than a well placed shot on a deer - stopped him dead in his tracksMsMoccasin wrote:

Re: First Open Carry Today
I did it, I did it!!
I OC'd yesterday in the Alexandria section of Fairfax Co. My wife and I went to lunch at Applebees on Rt.1 near Beacon Mall, then afterwards I went to a motorcycle shop/dealer in Hybla Valley and talked with a salesman for at least 30 minutes. No bad encounters, the dealer asked me what kind of work I did but he didn't seemed bothered at all. I must say it felt good, I will do it again.
