I found a Yugo SKS with plastic furniture, adjustible stock and bayonet for $500.00. Is it worth it or should I wait to find an AK at a reasonable price?

It could be a good deal if the bore looks good. Some of those old converted rifles have shot-out barrels from years of corrosive ammo and too little cleaning.

If you want a detachable magazine-fed, "tactical" rifle, get an AK. SKS's are great rifles, but once you add goofy stocks and detachable mags to them, you're losing out on the reliability and the point of an SKS. An SKS can never really be pressed into service to do an AK's job.

I've owned both SKS's and AK's....in my opinion, I prefer the AK. Really depends on what you want to use it for, but if you are conflicted about buying an AK, I'd say go with your hunch. Buy once, cry once.

It works like this... The SKS is a two part bolt system utilizing the same gas piston method as the AK.

It's more accurate because of a slight hesitation in the action that allows the bullet to be gone before the chamber opens.

At 300+meters with open sights, I'm VERY accurate with a standard 10 round SKS with a Monte Carlo Afterstock, using the bayonet "Spike" as a "Mono Pod".

It all depends on what you're needing to do. But Price wise? $500 is too much.

$350/$400 with a decent synthetic stock, and a clean bolt/barrel is fair.

I really liked my Norinco SKS, bought it for $99.00 new in the late 90s and over the years I put roughly 10k rounds through it without any problems. They are nice guns.

Realized this is likely pinned and welded, as per the ones I've seen, and removal is difficult and may put this in conflict with some of the stranger regulations, as would the plastic stock, but I'm no expert. However, this may be why the price is higher than others as it is rarer. Definitely cheaper than what the average shop will try to gouge for even the cheapest AK. Accuracy is as to be expected per surplus but chances are will be a bit better again than the average AK. Mags are usually the concern of new owner, pick either the monstrosities to make it a standard 20/30 (may require file work) or stick back in the internal box and get stripper clips. Also, even if previously owned and shot a few times I wouldn't doubt that the previous owner left some cosmoline behind.

Ive got both, both are great weapons and I couldnt be happier with both.

Type 56 here, bone stock... shoots like a champ. Paid $375, I thought it was a good deal, wood stock is like new.

I love mine. It's a 1950 Tula SKS with all matching numbers. It's definitely one that sees a lot of range time.
