newbie from Stafford

Post by skb »

Hi, I am hoping to learn. I want a handgun. Maybe a ccw permit, but mainly a gun in my home. Do I need a 'permit' for just my home? or is it ok to buy a gun? Thanks

Welcome

You don't need a permit. So go pick one out and get it.

Hi, welcome to the forum.

You do not need a permit, though you do need to be 21 to purchase from an FFL dealer. I take it you have little or no experience with firearms, if that is the case I would suggest talking face to face with someone knowledgable about firearms. Learn about firearms safety and marksmanship. We can give advice and recommendations online but in the end it will be your decision on what to buy. We will be having a picnic next weekend, check it out in this thread:

Take your time--try to handle as many as you can in all styles and sizes. When you find one that just feels right in your hand you'll know. Then decide caliber--capacity, price of ammo, availability of ammo, etc. Don't be afraid to ask questions or for recomendations at gun stores, then research online at forums like this one for feedback on a particular gun and visit the manufacturers website for specs.

For the home a good shotgun always works.

Many here that can point you to a good place in your area. I recommend a gun shop with a range that rents handguns. That way you can try several before deciding which is right for you. Good luck and :welcome: to VGOF.

For home defense a good shotgun loaded up with 00 Buckshotis a good option. If you're looking for a pistol then we would have to know your price range and such for a good recommendation. Personally I like a .380 or 1911 chambered in .45. I lean toward the .45 just for the stopping power. Also have to remember the difference between full metal jacket ammunition and Hollow Point. FMJ tends to go through a bad guy and thus anything behind winds up hit as well. HPs fragment on impact and have a lower chance of being through and through thus safer and more effective.

Anybody correct me if I got anything wrong here.....oh and :welcome:

 Hello and welcome to VGOF! :welcome: If you don't have any plans for saturday come to the picnic. There will be a lot of people there that can answer your questions and get you pointed in the right direction. Just my opinion, but since you are new to guns a class on gun safety would be a must!
