Sometimes it's tough to stay 21 feet away from folks, particularly in more urbanized areas such as malls on the weekend. Even if you've got your situational awareness going at full blast, a person standing next to you in line just doesn't give enough time (http://i.imgur.com/2dVXwPa.gif). Sort of puts a new face on that old saying (I guess the intelligentsia call it a "meme" these days) about showing up for a gunfight with a knife, doesn't it?

And yes, GeneFrenkel, it made me think of a sucker punch or two that I've been on one end or the other of in the course my misspent youth. Pappy used to say that if you saw you were going to have to fight, you'd better damn sure not only get in the first lick, but make it the last one, too, if you could manage it atall. Looks like the dude in your video understood that.

The one thing I remember in knife-fighting. No matter how good you are? You're GOING to get CUT! Period!

Getting cut isn't an issue. It's how deep the cut goes that can cause problems.

I believe that is a clip from the film "Surviving Edged Weapons".

We had to watch it as part of our defensive tactics class in academy. Very eye-opening and sobering film. (Also very graphic) really drives the point home about the danger of edged weapons and the importance of training to react to their use. Good watch if you can get a hold of it.

Hmm from a strategic standpoint I think when room is a issue it would be better to charge the one with knife and give them as little room as possible to wield it. Instead choosing to take the lesser wounds and try to grapple with them. Then wait for a chance to strike or flee.

Though it is simply easier to just know what's going on around you at all times. Honostly if I came upon someone looking suspicious I would rather draw and be wrong than get attacked.

This is also why JKD (Jeet Kune Do, for which Inosanto is legendary) involves a lot of knife work. First thing we all learn, though, is that you will get cut in a knife fight - period.

Guess the second-best strategy for those of us who have no hand-to-hand combat training would be to retreat and defend/deflect with both hands until we can get ahold of the knife hand, then hang on and hope to minimize defensive wounds until we can bring a pistol to bear and shoot the bastard.

First-best strategy would be to retreat before we find ourselve under knife attack.

This is some of what we teach in our Defensive Handgun I class. We will go into more drills on this in DH-II when we roll that out.

You see that's why I also carry a knife in addition to my gun, to meet them in a knife fight. Now I'm actually way better with a knife than my gun, it comes from years of preparing food, and one thing I pride myself on is being able to cleave flesh from bone with as few swipes as possible. Give me my kitchen knife and I'd have their arm off before they could blink!
