An interesting wrinkle on 1911s
A .45ACP 1911 pistol with a double-stack 11-round mag and the same grip dimensions as a standard 1911? And you can buy an extended mag that holds 14 rounds? And STI builds NICE pistols, too. Sounds like this belongs on my "gimme-one-rightdamnnow" list. Right purty, too. Downside? Can't even get ammo for an 8-round mag right now. Well, that and the $2,805 MSRP.

To each his own, Rev. But as for MY own, I just can't stand a damned rail on a 1911. Makes an otherwise beautiful pistol look like a buck-toothed mule with a bad overbite. To me, that's like strapping falsies onto Dollie Parton, or bolting training wheels on a Harley.

What rail? But speaking of Harleys how about a blue motorcycle: With a $2805 MSRP for a cousin to a 1911, I think I'd rather have a LMT MWS for a couple hundred more:dorminWS wrote:>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Look under the barrel. It's machined into underside of slide, apparently. Besides, it says "tactical" - that means there MUST be a rail and a flashlight on it somewhere.

Like i said (twice now), to each his own. And I wouldn't mind having one of those evil black .308s myself (If I had to choose, I'd rather have my M1A). But like it says on the webpage: OUT OF STOCK".
(a) I could actually GET one of those STIs if I was of a mind to, and
(b) 1911s are sort of special to me.
Besides, it would be easier to shoot out streetlights as you ride your blue motorcycle with the training wheels through town if you had a pistol, wouldn't it?

Re: An interesting wrinkle on 1911s
dorminWS, I took another look at it, I see where the frame has been milled at an angle below the front part of the slide, No rail though. If there was one you would notice a notch on it somewhere to retain whatever was mounted on the rail.
I know of your passion for 1911s, but that pistol is just a cousin to one, kind of like a Ballister Molina, a Colt Mustang or a Browning Hi Power is.

As another member was kind enough to point out to me in a PM: I was looking at the first post:grumpyMSG wrote:dorminWS, I took another look at it, I see where the frame has been milled at an angle below the front part of the slide, No rail though. and you were looking at the :

I am sorry for the confusion, you were correct. The one you were talking about does have a rail with several notches. Your comments made me think about a few others that have put rails on something that just plain looks funny:

Now if I were going to spend that kind of money on a 1911, I'd go for the: http://www.lesbaer.com/Hemi572.html
Then again I am a Mopar fan so I might be a little biased.
As for shootin' out street lights, I think the better pistol for doing that from the back of a Harley would be a Colt Service Model Ace. I doubt you would here the crack of a .22 over the Harley's exhaust.

Re: An interesting wrinkle on 1911s
I agree; everybody ought to have a Les Baer 1911. I am not familiar with the one you linked to, but I have handled and fired these two:
http://www.lesbaer.com/CMP.html
http://www.lesbaer.com/Premier5.html
The first new Les Baer I ever handled was so tight that when I went to rack it open I thought it was rusted shut for just a minute. So was the only other new one I've handled. But they still ran like the proverbial Singer sewing machine.
And I suppose I'll have to admit I've quit being quite the 1911 purist I used to be. I even have a 1911 or two that ain't .45ACP. I'm intrigued by the idea of the Apreiro's double-stack mag without a fat grip and still having a 1911 trigger and double-safety arrangement. Sure; it has a weird grip and some other stuff Old John Moses wouldn't have recognized, but but I figure it's a double-first-cousin to a 1911 and I've got thoroughbred 1911s for when I want to pay homage to Mr. Browning.
Also, the Schuemann barrel on the STI Apeiro is a pretty big deal, too. There are hard-core 1911 Junkies out there that buy stuff like Les Baers and then pay more money for a Schuemann barrel to fit on it.
So, on balance, just so y'all know, I wouldn't refuse to accept it if y'all were to take up a collection and get me one of them.

For Les Baers, I like the Premier.
Other makes? Nighthawk Custom, Ed Brown, Wilson Combat and Kimbers are all really nice 1911s in the "production customized" category, and I personally think that the Ruger SR1911 and the Colt Commander are both dang nice pistols even though they may have a little less snob appeal (and price premium). Pay attention to the sights. Some 1911 sights (like the mil-spec ones) pretty much suck; I can't hardly even see them- -they seem to want to blend into the rest of the slide. Spend a little extra for top-drawer sights if/when you buy a 1911. I like the Nitron white-dot sights pretty well.
Speaking of good pistol sights, just a couple of days ago I actually got my hands on one of the STI Apeiro 2011 pistols I OP'ed about, and the Dawson Fiber Optic Front sights on it may be the most visible/easily integrated into the sight picture that I've ever seen. I really like it. But I'm afeared they oversold the "double stack magazines without over-sizing the circumference of the grip, which remains comparatively the same as the circumference of a 1911" part of their sales pitch by just a smidgeon. The grip on this pistol feels a little fatter than a standard full-sized 1911 to me, but not as fat as a Para-Ordinance P 14-45; and the grip on a Glock 21 is considerably fatter than the STI Apeiro 2011. So the verdict on the grip dimensions has to be "close but no cigar". Aside from the grip dimensions, the ergonomics of the Apeiro are very good and 1911-like; and the trigger action is excellent. I haven't had a chance to fire it yet, but I'm looking forward to it. It may not quite be a 1911, but is sure does appear so far to be a really nice not-quite-1911.
