I keep saying that it is best to invest in immediately useful items. I don't have much faith in gold; can't eat it, can't burn it for heat, can't swallow it to reduce a fever. It might make an acceptable bullet, but I can collect other metals for that.

Gold is sound money. If the world comes to a point that it has no use for sound money, it's practically the end of civilization...at least for a while, but then we'll want/need money again. Far more likely is the collapse of society and government, but not an end to civilization. It seems to happen in Argentina once a decade lately.

Except that's exactly what did NOT happen in countries which have experienced such circumstances in recent memory. The simple reason is that gun are not rare. Sure there are shortages today, but if the government was to cease to function or be effective at imposing the regulations and restrictions on firearms, full auto AKs and everything else would show up by the boat load and cost next to nothing. You honestly don't think some dirt poor child soldier in Africa paid $1200 for his full auto AK... you can literally buy a full auto AK for pocket change in any place without a functioning first world government.
