there was skeet shooting and something else in Bull Run/Manassas. There seems to be limited places to have fun with guns in Northern VA, there was another place I can't remember what it was, that was member's only, but there was a waiting list to be a member, any other places around and what kind of place, and what kind of activities are there, Im new back to this area and the only other 'range' I found was non-responsive are they private ranges, or places that I don't know about?

You are thinking of Fairfax rod and gun club. It is a great facility but the waiting list is over 70 people currently. That's where I shoot most of the time.

bull run near manassas is a county park that has skeet, trap, sporting clays and wobble, nice place, very reasonable rates (pay as you go).

isaac walton has a place south side of leesburg. rifle and pistol ranges and also skeet/trap. you have to pay to join and i think there are also work requirements.

340 defense, outdoor range about half an hour west of leesburg, has pistol and rifle bays going out to 400 yds. believe it is annual membership only something around $300/year.

I was hoping for a little more details on Blue Ridge. I have two newbies I need to take out for their first time shooting and would prefer it if they were not paying $1 a round for 9mm.

IMO, a loud and crowded indoor range is a very poor learning environment for anyone, especially a new shooter.

Blue Ridge is OK, as indoor ranges go.

When I'm taking new shooters (aside from class groups), I try to make the trip first thing in the morning on a weekday. There have been times when my guest and I were the only people on the range, having arrived at 9:30am on a Tuesday.

Unfortunately, for my class groups, I pretty much have to take them immediately after the classroom session, so a weekend afternoon. Probably the busiest time. If I think someone is a bit sound sensitive, I have them double-up on hearing protection - both foam ear plugs and ear muffs. And whenever possible, I try to make sure I end up on the pistol side (as opposed to the rifle side). Sometimes it's a longer wait, but it's worth it.

As for cost, if you are not a member, the price is $20 for the first shooter, and $10 for the next 3 (max of 4 people on a lane). If you are a member, the price is $10 per guest (up to 3 guests on the lane). Under 18 shoot for free.

If you want to go as the guest of a member during the day, drop me a line. I'm always up for a good excuse to go to the range.

I agree, but I don't really have many options around here. Back in Ohio, I would go out on private land. No time restrictions, no other shooters.

Since I work with these guys, the plan is to take a long lunch.. We can afford the lane time. It is the ammo prices/availability that scare me.

Silver Eagle Group in Ashburn is a modern indoor range. They sell ammo over the counter. Last time I was there (approx 10 days ago) 9mm was $15/box. You can pay by the hour for range time, but be prepared to wait your turn.

Just went today. No line! Nice facility. Was kind of surprised how small it is. Wouldn't say it was too cheap at $20 an hour but I don't really have any place else to go locally and it is very close. Probably try to hit it around every few weeks. I sure need practice.

Then I went to the walmart down the road. Ammo shelves pretty bare. Just another problem these days.





Oh, also, fired my first personally owned pistol and was pleased. Bought it in December and waited until today.
