Regardless of the original intent, the idea of a literacy test still has merit. Anyone who is illiterate, in this day and age, is willfully so. There is no excuse for illiteracy, anymore.

Personally, not only am I not opposed to the photo ID and the literacy test, I also believe that proof of gainful employment should be required to vote.

It seems that opening up the voting booths to everyone has proven detrimental to our society.

Not allowing a vote based on employment is so wrong. Every legal citizen regardless of stature is entitled to vote if they have proof of citizenship and have completed their voter registration. Anything else is just discrimination.

Indeed not. If one is not contributing anything useful to our society, they ought not have a say in how our society is run. Allowing unproductive people to vote is what made our current mess possible.

Proof of eligibility to vote:

1) Voter ID (literacy required)
2) Photo ID
3) Form 1040 from the previous year

Problem solved. Put this into law immediately!

This is one of the things that changed as we transitioned from a Republic to a Democracy. Another would be popular voting on Senators. The Founders were afraid of democracy because they were well versed in ancient Greece and what turned into mob rule.

Under a Republic, where the rule of law via the Constitution was upheld, the people were much more secure in their Rights regardless who was in charge. The Federal government really didn't manage or interact with citizens, but rather with the states. The laws mostly focused on managing the states within the power granted to it by the Constitution. The Republic had limited suffrage because the idea was that only those who had skin in the game should be voting on taxes, etc. This worked since the government wasn't to regulating and interacting with the citizens.

However, under our existing democracy 51% of the people force the other 49% to give up their wealth, submit to violations of their Rights, etc. Politicians, on both sides but just in different ways, have become masters of how to promise something for nothing in exchange for power. Thus were born the social and warfare states.

I couldn't disagree with you more. So if I get laid off and can't find work because of a poor economy I should lose my right to vote? Only those with jobs and money should have a say on how they would rule the rest of the country? What an elitist attitude.

Since when does my holding a conviction that one should pay one's own way make me an elitist? I'd argue that the person who feels entitled to have me work to support him while he does not work is the elitist.

Having been laid off in the past, having been poor most of my life, and having even been homeless three or four times in my lifetime, I can fully understand why one would disagree with my position. However, I still maintain that one should be productive in order to vote.

Know why I am no longer jobless and homeless? Because I am articulate, and I am willing to do things like crawl under nasty houses, dress like the statue of liberty and wave to passing cars, and basically do a large number of things that most people are too proud to do. Also, I make myself presentable, because I know that I represent whatever company I happen to work for. And, I keep my debts to a minimum, because I don't want to find myself owing thousands of dollars should I lose my job for any reason. I can sympathize with those who fall on hard times, but that sympathy goes away when that situation starts looking permanant.

whatever happens to" all men are created equal"? I guess we should rewrite the Declaration of Independence and Constitution to make sure it includes "only if you are working and paying taxes". How about as a society we actually attack the cause of this issue instead of just shunning those who are less fortunate or didn't get the proper upbringing from bad parenting and now are stuck in their situation? As much as I hate the welfare state that this country is becoming, I prefer not to overlook the Constitution and the Bill of Rights to make myself feel better about it.

Sure, we are all created equal. Does this mean that we are all entitled to equal jobs, equal housing, equal transportation, equal annual salaries, etc.?

Of course not. You get those things on your own merit, you earn your house, your car, your job, and all that.

Likewise, you should earn the priveledge of voting. Otherwise, career welfare recipients will show up in large amounts to vote for the guy who promises them the most of my money. Kinda like they do now.

:clapping: Voter ID laws are needed for sure. I had the privilege to work as a Poll Watcher in this last national election here in Va. (Independent from the Gov't) I sure did have my eyes opened wide when I found out how much Chicago style voting has become a national thing. The HAVA 2002 law (no need to remind me of who was in veto power at the time.) has enabled widespread fraud. Its scarey how no one reports any of this (Both sides of the aisle). Motor voter laws should be outlawed. In ALOT of the country you don't even have to PROVE citizenship in order to REGISTER to vote. We even found people from Illinois who belonged to a organizing union in a retirement center in MY community. They have the right to take ballots from everyone (HAVA-2002), and choose who's to mail in. (Caused a big fuss) They were throwing out votes for Romney, and were caught. Unfortunately it is VERY hard to get a charge to be filed against these people, since corruption is rampant. Voter ID laws are a START, but more needs to be done. One step at a time! :clapping: Americans would be outraged if they knew ALL of the facts. That is why no one is reporting it in the news- DUH!! State run media...Fox included

When the founding fathers wrote the Constitution, and for many years after, only males who were land-owners could vote. That changed after the 1860's and also in the 1910's (?) when women were finally allowed to vote.

We've come a long way.

If people cannot organize themselves to have a valid ID, maybe they shouldn't vote. For my ID I can use: DL, passport, voters card. I'm thinking maybe the CCW permit and Voters Card should be a photo ID, similar to the DL. Heck, the DMV could issue them. Unfortunately, that would make sense (however, cost $).

Personnally I think the same standard should prevail wether buying a gun or voting. Both are rights. Most anyone not able to own a gun shouldn't be able to vote either. Mentally unstable, felon. You do the crime you do the time.

I realize that some group of people have decided that voting should be a right, and we have all been taught that it is, but the voting process worked better when it was viewed more as a privilege.

While one who habitually collects welfare should not be allowed to vote, he still has the right to defend himself, and has the right to the tools to do so. Therefore, I cannot agree with applying the same standard as gun ownership to voting. It's just not the same thing.
