Letter to Congress/Senate

Post by VACoastie »

Dear ______,
Greetings. My name is Chris. 25 Years Old, Step-Father, Husband, Military Member (U.S. Coast Guard) and proud Virginian. I write to you today because of the atrocities that have come about lately throughout the Senate and Congress.

When I first learned about the Newtown shooting, I knew things were going to change. I didn’t realize however that responsible gun owners like myself were going to take the blunt force that has been thrown to us. As a constituent and a keeper of a sacred Oath, I do not find this remotely acceptable in the slightest. Every day responsible gun owners keep their personal defense and recreation arms and ammo locked up safe, secure, out of the reach of children and criminals. We follow strict rules at gun ranges, in our large tracts of land, and in every day carry. The law abiding citizen should never be the target of such scrutiny, ever. As a voice amongst thousands that have already spoken on the subject you know who you need to target. It’s the criminals, the mentally ill, and the black market suppliers. Instead of attacking laws that have been in our possession since 1789 (Bill of Rights), attack the cause of the problem. You never make laws to hurt the many because of the few. I believe this is a logic that is easily understood.

Shortly thereafter was the talk of Sequestration. This elephant in the room that everyone ignored but knew was coming. Whether you’re Republican or Democratic, you knew what was about to happen. How is it that anyone, regardless of party affiliation, can accept a large salary and then have the nerve to say that Soldiers and Sailors who protect you and your country do not have the privilege to an education? How long has it been since you lived off $40,000 a year trying to feed and provide for your family? I’m in utter shock that despite our low salary and lackluster compensations that a single member within Congress/Senate would have even come up with the possibility of taking away our education possibilities. You are wrecking our ability to better provide for our families and serve our country appropriately. However, as an elected member you can sit within the halls of our forefathers and founders of this nation and continue receiving bonuses at midnight, taking holiday retreats, spending tax-payer money for balls and feasts, and without even a mention of lowering your pay for not getting jobs completed for which you have been elected for. If average Joe doesn’t complete his job – he gets fired.

With that said, let it be noted: I’m watching your votes closely. If you cannot make the decisions that your constituents are asking for, if you cannot make a logical decision instead of a purely political decision (Read: quid pro quo) you will not receive my vote come the next election cycle. I will then reach out to constituents within your area and ask the same of them. My family has been in the area of Virginia for over 300 years. That’s a lot of time to have family roots in an area. If these problems cannot be fixed by Virginians then I will uproot and migrate to another state who can get it completed. I stand for my Country, my State, the Citizens, and my Family. Where do you stand?

Sincerely,
Me

I'm thinking of hand-writing this to all 48 of our representatives - Whatcha think before I start getting hand cramps? Comments/Critiques (good and bad) are more than welcomed.

Legislators that are in races you are ineligible fore most likely will ignore your letter as you cannot vote for them. That might save some hand cramping.

You second para eludes to the message that much more impending and substantial issues are at hand - namely our slumped economy, credit (fallen once... might fall again), the debt (deficit indictes how fast the debt grows), inability/umwillingness to create a [balanced] budget (a core responsibility in the Constitution), etc, etc., &ct. Keep pointing out there is a lot they have to do, but are wasting time, effort, and money on pointless and meaningless grandstanding.

hth, brother.

I figured that this kind of fits the situation. It is about their retirement plan vs ours.

Justifying my means with their end.
