Got my upper back from Sterling Arsenal!

Post by programmatore »

I have a factory SIG 516 7.5" PDW short barrel rifle. I bought it because I thought it would be cool suppressed. Well, I found out later that 7.5" is just too short to run suppressed -- I risk having baffle strikes and at that length there would be so much unburnt powder that it would kill the suppressor.

I tried finding a SIG 516 10" CQB upper but no one had it in stock so I just bit the bullet and had Sterling Arsenal cut down the upper from my SIG 516 16" Patrol rifle. (I now have a spare, non-SBR lower as a result.) It took Sterling Arsenal longer than expected to cut the barrel down because they had to fabricate a barrel wrench since SIG uses a proprietary barrel nut. The wait was woth it, though, and the rifle feels a lot more balanced now. I can't wait to get my AAC SDN-6 suppressor!

Here is a picture of the SIG 516 7.5" PDW. Definitely cool looking but also very impractical -- it is loud and spits out huge fireballs at the range!

Try a noveske flaming pig.
PWS also has the CQB muzzle device that works great on shorties.
I had a SCAR 17 and 16. I also had a bunch of Glocks and a couple H&K pistols. Oh and a DDM4, but I sold everything when our government told me these dangerous tools can actually hurt someone. Apparently they grow legs and go on killing sprees.

So sweet! How accurate is the 7.5 barrel compared to the 10".

What twist rate are the barrels and what gr ammo were you going to shoot?

Love how that 10" will look suppressed!

For 5.56mm 10" is considered the minimum for acceptable accuracy and use with a suppressor. If the bullet isn't stable enough for suppressor use, accuracy isn't going to be too hot either. That's not the point of such a short barrel though.

so what is the advantage of the short barrel? easier to use when sweeping a room and turning corners?

Just curious/

Still a Sig AR - I am jealous :)

Yup, easier to go around corners in tight quarters. Also, since the SIG 516 is a gas piston AR it tended to be a bit front heavy. The 10" barrel feels a lot more balanced than the 16".

You give up some accuracy and distance with the shorter barrel but that is not what I am after. I really wanted a rifle I can run suppressed and 16" barrel + 7-2/3" suppressor was just too long for me. I initially got the 7.5" rifle but found out later that it was just too short to run suppressed so I went and got my 16" upper cut down to 10".

I would suggest the Archon Mfg. Linear Compensator for a lower cost alternative to the flaming pig. It worked great on my 7.5 AR pistol and they cerakoted it FDE for a few extra bucks. Really pushes the concussion down range. Your ear drums and fellow shooters will thank you. I'd prefer if they notched it for a crescent, but a strap wrench torqued it down just fine.

Yes, for CQB sort of shooting. For example, the SEALs use the MK18 (now supplied be DD). A 10" barrel is the best compromise IMHO. Enough velocity so you still have a rifle platform. Long enough hand-guards so you can still use it like a rifle platform and mount lights, etc. (I consider 9" rails the min for my preferences, you can go shorter if you don't want any accessories...say 7"). Considerably shorter and about the same length as a M4/16" AR when suppressed.

For me suppression is the big advantage. More or less the same weight and balance (can vs. barrel...can is typically slightly heavier), but without the massive headache/hearing loss if you need it for SD/HD without hearing protection. All these semi-autos are still very loud (typically around 140dB at the ear), but the difference is considerable.
