2013 Appleseed Clinic Dates Are Up

Post by FiremanBob »

The Appleseed Project for Virginia has posted six dates for 2013 and registration for them is now open at this link: https://appleseedinfo.org/search-states ... e=Virginia

I hope to meet some fellow forum members there. I'll be in the orange hat.

There will probably be additional clinics posted later when host clubs confirm dates for them.

For us new to the forum can you give a brief description about what is the Appleseed Project?

This should be helpful for those not familiar with Appleseed.

The Appleseed Project is a program that teaches a combination of marksmanship skills and American heritage - particularly the crystallization of the American commitment to freedom that resulted in the "shot heard 'round the world" and the beginning of the Revolution on April. 19, 1775. It is geared to develop our ability to act as capable, involved citizens in our own governance, as intended by the Founders, who risked everything in the cause of liberty.

The clinic involves two intense days of shooting instruction based on the techniques used by the US military beginning in the 1940s. Participants who shoot the equivalent of an Army Expert score on the official target are awarded a neat "Rifleman" patch.

For a better, full explanation, see here: http://www.appleseedinfo.org/ and poke around the site using the tabs at the top.

It comes down to which clubs, ranges, or individuals with suitable land are willing to host an Appleseed clinic for a weekend. There are plenty of interested participants and most shoots fill up early; the challenge is finding host locations. If you know anyone who might be interested, please PM me.

Used to be (probably still is) if you have, or know someone that has a farm with suitable location for shooting at least 25 meters with a good backstop and room for people to park their vehicles and line up side by side on a firing lane then an Appleseed can be done there.

I've been in (as a shooter or as an instructor) 6 appleseeds held on private farmland when the owners felt strongly enough to work with the RWVA to get the land checked out (One of the Appleseed instructors will have to look it over and make sure its suitable and then there's probably some paperwork that has to be filled out.

To me those are the best Appleseeds. Less interruptions than on many established ranges and no range people trying to "take over" by jumping into the instruction. Sometimes its aggraving when a range guy starts to argue with an Appleseed instructor.

I have never seen that happen at the two clubs where I have shot and worked as an instructor. The club members have always been gracious and helpful, and there was no interference at all with any aspect of the clinic.

Yeah, KC just walks by every so often looks things over, talks to the shoot boss (if he's sitting back under the cover in the shade) and continues with his rounds. Some ranges have wandering range safety officers that feel the need to get involved.

I keep saying I will go, but....

It is far enough away that it requires a hotel OR camping.
Now if it was setup close to a state park camp ground....

I believe that there is camping available at the Cavalier Club in Montpelier. Here are details:

There are four clinics scheduled this year at Cavalier. It's a beautiful club.

People use to camp out at Black Creek Range, too. The big grassy area by the parking lot at the 50/100 yd. range usually has tents set up during an Appleseed weekend.

I'd totally go to one of these with my girlfriend if I could find some reasonably priced .22 ammo. I refuse to pay 9mm prices per round for .22LR!

Are the MD the same? Annapolis is a lot closer to me. Hope crossing the state line doesn't get me banned!

The program is the same. Appleseed teaches thousands of participants nationwide every year.

Everything I'm seeing says that the going rate for .22LR, when you can find it, is about .12/round. 9mm is considerably more.

The problem is I have 9mm I bought for less than .12 a round I am shooting now.
And
I think my 22LR I am shooting was purchased at .03 a round.

I have a hard time paying what they want for ammo now. I think the price will go down by June.

+1

The only people who are not charging that much rarely have any stock because everyone recognizes that the old prices are out of line and buy it regardless if they need it or not. If I see CCI Mini-Mags at Walmart for around $0.07/rnd, I'm buying as many as they will let me and so is everyone else.

I remember when WWB at Walmart was $9.99/100 about ten years ago. Now we pay more than that for .22lr! Between inflation and the wars/government purchases, things have gotten crazy. Of course, it's exactly what Obama wanted to do with gas.
