First gun-law flip flop? Long Island senator says SAFE Act a “mistake”

A Long Island Republican says his vote in favor of New York’s new gun-control law was a “mistake” and is now co-sponsoring a bill to repeal it.

Freshman Sen. Phil Boyle, R-Suffolk County, issued a news release on Friday detailing his change of heart, criticizing the way the bill was rushed through the Legislature. The new law—known as the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act, or SAFE Act—violates the Second Amendment, Boyle claims.

From Boyle’s statement:

“The so-called SAFE act was a mistake. Its passage lacked transparency and public input and its wording was ill-conceived and of questionable legality
Lawmakers like myself might have caught these mistakes if we were given more than two hours to read the bill. A good leader admits a mistake and works to rectify it. That is what I am doing.”

This is just annoying. If you don't understand something, you shouldn't vote "yes". If you felt you didn't have enough time to read it and realize that it was poorly written, you shouldn't have voted "yes". And it's not like there weren't plenty of reps saying exactly that, that pushing it through just to be first was a grave disservice to their constituents. Guy's just trying to salvage what's left of his first and last term.

I'm tired of politicians calling themselves "leaders". They are supposed to be representatives. It would be refreshing to hear one of them with the modesty to say that.

Well his tail got caught n a crack didn't it. Pity he put his tail in the door jam and shut the door himself. Now if he had not voted it in the first place we would not be here.

The ONLY reason this guy is worried is because he saw the size of the 2A protest crowd last Thursday in Albany and is now worried he won't see a second term. He wouldn't care otherwise.

Agreed. Senate Republicans went along for the ride because they know if they didn't Cuomo would have blasted them in the court of public opinion.

You know what I'm really tired of hearing about?

The f'cking "court of public opinion". Stop WORRYING about your PR, and DO YOUR JOB, POLITICIANS!

You can hate Ron Paul, and Ken Cuccinelli ALL YOU WANT, but you have to admit, you know EXACTLY where they stand on issues!

No doubts, no wondering, no worries if they're on your side.

@ Bob: I been saying that for years; free people don't have leaders.

@ Rev: You're right. Not a big fan of Ron Paul, but I know where he stands. But, then, if one pays attention, it's clear where the others stand.

The best place for any representitive to stand, is in fear of their constituants. Someone brought up tar and feathers in another thread; 'bout time for that to make a comeback.
