Have I been ripped off?

Post by widefat »

I just received two boxes of 308 Federal Matchking, 175gr, sold as "new"
I am convinced these are reloads. Am I wrong? I see small dents, scrapes, and an overall grody appearance.
In th elast two pics, I compare them too a different batch of Federal Matchking (168gr).
What say ye?

The last two are compared too the other batch of Federal:

Were they from a discount ammo site or other wise bulk ammo? Because they usually sell the ones not pretty enough to be retail but still usable.

most reloads have a reddish mark around the primer
The stains on the packaging indicate freshness

It's hard to say. My .308 reloads look as good as the ones you are comparing to. I don't know anything about a reddish mark around the primer. Maybe some big ammo manufacturers do that or something, but I've never seen it. Either way you shouldn't feel ripped off, unless you paid more than you normally would for those boxes. Those usually go for around $20, so if that is how much you paid then don't stress it.

That brass looks terrible, but I really can't tell from these photos if they have been fired or not. I would inspect the ejector ring for missing brass. Some cartridges will have ejector scratches that won't polish out. Still not a guaranty they are new if you don't find them, but if you do find ejector marks, you have a good talking point to argue.
