Brief Intro
Brief Intro
Good evening, all!
I am a 26-year veteran law enforcement officer and have been an avid rifle, pistol and shotgun shooter and competitor since my beloved Dad got me started shooting at Fairfax R&G in the early 60's. I would venture to say that there has not been more than a four or five day stretch that I have not been at one of the many gun clubs I belong to in the near fifty years, since!
Sad thing of it is, the only thing I can't forgive Dad for is (heck, he went to his grave saying he couldn't forgive himself for!) settling our family down in the sick, liberal state of maryland.
Well, currently living in So. md, I now have just 4.5 years to go until I retire when my wife (retired FIre/Rescue/EMS Coordinator) and I will be moving the h*ll out of this morally deficient and dysfunctional state and to F-R-E-E-D-O-M, most likley in Virginia.
I have literally despised (heck, hated!) living in MD a little more each year since I was eight years old and first started competing with the Acorns. Even then, I knew something about this state stank! That amounts to a lot of sheer disdain and I have committed myself to channeling that energy into formulating a plan of action to allow the wife and I to move to a location in a vicinity with at least four or five gun clubs within a 60-minute drive (preferably closer).
First step is to begin doing research into what part of the state we want to move to and we are balancing our desire to spend our retirment shooting, fishing and enjoying fresh air (and freedom) while still remaining within an 8-hour drive of the grandkids (beauties!) in So. md.
Bottom line, I will be asking a LOT of questions and looking for a LOT of help in my quest.
Thanks for having me; I truly hope I came to one of the right places for me to narrow down our search.
I will not be happy until the ^%$#@! - up state of maryland is in our rearview mirror, for the last time!
DO NOT GIVE AN INCH TO THESE LIBERAL B*STARDS!!!!

Welcome aboard! Good luck with surviving Maryland for another 4+ years!
How far from the state line (route 301 bridge) are you? I know a lot of people who live in Virginia near route 301 and commute to DC daily. If you;re within 30 minutes of the bridge, then come on down right now!

Dont be too sure about obumma being gone
Re: Brief Intro
It takes us a bit longer to get from our current (temporary!) residence to the Rte 301 Bridge than it does from the bridge to Ruther Glen, where I shoot Charity Hill from time to time. I swear, I'm convinced know how folks on the 'wrong' side of the Berlin Wall used to feel.
Thanks for the list of counties to start makin' contacts with realtors in. This is the kind of assist I appreciate as, I noticed even some shooters in Loudon County are having to put up with "city transplants" who are surprised shooting is a pasttime property owners SHOULD be enjoying!

Welcome from an ex MD resident. Moving back to my home state after spending 12 years in that s-hole of a state is the best decision I made for me and my family.

Thanks guys. Pretty incredible experience today; as I type this (11pm Friday night), well over 150 MD gun owners remain in the House in Annapolis, of the 1,300 who went to testify against Gov. O'Malley's gun control package. Less than 50 showed up to support the Bill but, of course, that is all you saw on TV. The most audacious example I have ever seen of tyranny, firsthand. Absolutely unbelievable but, given we're in MD, passage is "in the bag" for the Gov.
Anyhoo, resumed my search for "relocation and refuge" this eveningby researching medical campuses, which are also high on our list of criteria. Was good to learn the. UVA has a teaching hospital outside Charlottsville.
Stay safe and say prayers for the stalwart freedom fighters who refuse not have their voices heard in annapolis!!!!

Ah-ha, okay, this is the kind of info I need. I simply can't afford to "make a mistake", this 'll be the last move for us.
I've been thinking about it and my primary pursuits are clays, pistol and rifle. The kids are grown so, schools aren't that big a priority (other than their correlation as indicators to crime and general quality of life).
Some may relate to this but, my wife and I take different approaches to huntin' for real estate; she calls an agent and I got to the NSSF "Where to Shoot" interactive search by zip resource!

You may wish to look at the voting map for Virginia showing which counties went red and blue. The blue ones are the higher density population centers which tend to be more "statist".

Excellent advice -- heading to dig up just such a map, now; thank you!GeneFrenkle wrote:You may wish to look at the voting map for Virginia showing which counties went red and blue. The blue ones are the higher density population centers which tend to be more "statist".
