New from Florida
Morning everybody!
I'm Mike and I currently live in southern Florida (way to close to Miami for my taste) and my family and I will be moving over to Triangle, VA with in the next few weeks to a month for a job I just got. My wife are big into weapons and when I stumbled on to this site looking up that picture of the "weapons permitted sign" at busch gardens (still haven't found out if its real or not) we had to sign up because it seems like a great source for all of our soon coming questions! (You can almost feel the joy in that statement) Cant wait to look around some more!

Welcome!
One of the first things you will notice that is different in VA vs. FL is that open carry is legal, and common, in VA so after you establish residence and get your VA Concealed Handgun Permits you won't have to worry about "printing" or "flashing" your carry gun.
I've never carried in VA without a valid CHP so I'm not familiar with any restrictions that exist wrt open carry without one.

Re: New from Florida
Welcome to Virginia from another transplanted Floridian. You will "like it, like it, like it". We don't have school tax but we do have a tax on your vehicles on top of the tag fee. Newer the car..higher the tax. Seems kind of regressive to me but I don't buy new much anyway so no bother. We also can't hunt on Sundays. No real reason, just the way it always has been and ever will be. Great trees, seasons, water and people. Folks will say hello to you when you have not clue who they are. Not answeriing will get you glared at big time. Politeness counts. You start every phone conversation even with perfect strangers with "How are you? Hows the family? and you had better care about the answer. Then you conduct business. You say hello to people in the Lowe's parking lot. You let folks change lanes in fromt of you and wave them through intersections when you both get there at the same time. It is sort of like Florida was in the 1970s before all the New Yorkers moved in. Sorry that was not a nice thing to say. That is the number one rule. Be nice. I am still getting used to it. Good Luck

You will also like being able to conduct daily business without dealing with toll roads. Well, we do have a couple of tolls, but nothing like Florida.

Re: New from Florida

I've been to Busch Gardens several times and don't recall any sign regarding weapons. The act they don't teach me like a criminal and make me walk through a metal detector like the Communist Dominion(AKA kings dominion) is reason enough for me to go there. Not to mention the fact there is shade in the park as opposed to KDs constant in your face sun.
Alright I probably sound like I work their or something, back on topic really, welcome and I hope you like it in VA!

Re: New from Florida
I was up in Ohio visiting my brother Cost Guard station and walking over to the federal building where he worked random people were saying hello to me and every single time I thought I was being mugged or something this is going to take some getting used to. Also you said something about seasons what is this "seasons" you speak of?HighExpert wrote:Folks will say hello to you when you have not clue who they are. Re: New from Florida
Thanks for all the information. I clearly have some things to get used to as far as "politeness" goes because traveling through Miami you tend to forget about that. I just have one more question for you guys. This is going to seem silly posting it on here but I'm a big paintballer (milsim) and I wanted to open a new branch of my team from SFL up there where I end up moving. Would any of you happen to know how popular it is up there?

Re: New from Florida
Oh, don't make the same mistake I made when I got here and said, "Virginia is not really South,...it is kind of middle Atlantic actually". My wife's relatives weren't sure I was going to be allowed in the house. I was also informed that there was no Civil War here. We call it "Our recent unpleasantness". Just sayin.
