Moving to Virginia

Post by dsbock »

Greetings,

I will be moving to the Richmond area of Virginia within the next year or so and I'm looking for more information.

Based on my research, I would like to find someplace in either Amelia or Powhatan counties. Rural is preferable to suburban. High speed internet is a work requirement. I would also need to be within a 30-45 minute commute of Richmond.

Where I live now, I am a member of the volunteer fire department and I would like to continue that service when I move. Someplace nearer one of the fire stations in either county would be a plus.

Ideally I would like a property with enough acreage to shoot safely on my own property.

Does anyone have opinions, information, etc regarding my want list? We will be traveling to the Richmond area in the near future to have a look around. Is there anything in particular I should look at in the area?

Thanks.

David

Former Putnam-Dutchess county resident... 17 years removed (Thank goodness!!) I had the opportunity to move to four states but after a few trips here it was a no brainier and the place we settled reminded me of home the most (minus the hills & mountains we're use too)

Powhatan county is really nice, I have a co-worker who lives there, and my boy's an I have hunted in the area, truly nice indeed. It's not as far as Amelia but then again I'm out in New Kent so both are bit of a drive for me.

Once again Congrats on the upcoming move, It was great for my family and besides I don't miss the taxes!

Heck the majority of my family had fled, my sister and brother in-law are the last ones left up there and they put their house on the market three weeks ago.

Shoot me a PM if you have any other questions whatever I can do to help!

Mike,

Thanks for the welcome and info. We were considering New Kent as well. However, Amelia/Powhatan seemed like they would be a better fit. We are going to come down and look around a few times before we decide on a location.

Crossfireltd,

When did you relocate? Where in New York did you hail from and where in Virginia did you wind up?

For both of you, what were the easiest and hardest things to get used to after you moved to Virginia?

GeneFrenkle,

Thanks for the welcome.

High speed Internet is going to be difficult in those places. There are some pockets of western Chesterfield county on the border of Amelia that you can still get high speed Internet while maintaining a somewhat rural feel.

Lat night we got back from our first exploratory trip to Richmond. We stayed in a hotel in Glen Allen and visited New Kent, Amelia, and Powhatan. A great time was had by all.

At this point, we have pretty much decided on Powhatan County between Powhatan proper and the Chesterfield County line. When we come back down in fall (September/October) we will meet with a realtor and start the property finding process.

If any of you are members of the Powhatan Fire Department, thanks for your hospitality. One of the things I want to do after we move is continue my activities as a volunteer fire fighter.

We stopped at Southern Gun World and Dominion Shooting Range in Chesterfield. More friendly and welcoming people.

For those who like wine, Bodie Vineyards are great folks. They came out in the snow (at least what Virginians consider snow  ) to let us taste some wine and buy a couple of bottles. After chatting for a few minutes, we were even asked how soon we could move to the area.

Virginia is looking better and better. I need to find more graphic design work and/or a job teaching computer applications/graphic design in the Richmond area.

Thanks again to all the friendly, hospitable folks we met this weekend. You convinced us that this move will work out well for us.

A friend lives in Powhatan lives on rt 60 and they have fios. Its best to just get on fios website and start randomly putting in address( get some addresses from zillow.com would work the best). That should give you an idea of where they reach

Reddn,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into Fios.

David,

Let me know if I can assist you with any firearms training needs when you get here. I'm a former NY'er as well (Bronx and Rockland County).

If you need a real estate agent, I know the best one in Richmond. Just sold our house. He's fantastic.

Jim,

Please PM/email me with your realtor's contact info. We're planning on coming down again in Sep/Oct to look at houses.

As for training, I'm hoping to get my NRA Instructor certification before we leave New York. I'd be happy to help with any classes you or another instructor offers.

Thanks.

Depending on the elections and the current tax hikes, you might want to keep going until you hit South Carolina.

Yeah, the urban centers are flopping the elections and not in a good way. I hear Wyoming is nice!

Except that Wyoming now has a minister that Virginia was glad to get rid of.

Sorry for the late response.....
We lived in Smith Point, LI which is in Suffolk County on the south shore of Long Island. I am a disabled survivor of both bombings of the World Trade Center after losing immediate family members on 9/11 my Wife and I decided to move closer to our oldest daughter who lives in Williamsburg and was expecting our first grand child. We have been here for about 7 years and for the most part enjoy it. I regret not moving to the country (Amelia, Powhatan or Louis), as they say hindsight is 20/20. The easiest thing to get use to is the people here, gun ownership and extremely low auto insurance rates (compared to NY). The hardest thing imho is good competent medical care (but that won't matter once ObamaCare kicks in) and my biggest pet peeve is with Virginia drivers (no insult to any forum members), most drivers do not use turn signals and like to tailgate. All in all it was a great decision and for the most part the majority of people hear are extremely kind, welcoming and friendly.

ProShooter,

Thanks for the realtor info. We'll get in touch with him before we come down next.

CrossFireLtd.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss on 9/11. While I didn't lose anyone, some of my friends lost friends and co-workers of theirs.

I know where Smith Point is located. My beloved grew up in Mastic. Did you go to William Floyd High School?

We are looking at Powhatan/Amelia as our destination. We hope to come back down in September to look at properties. Our goal is to make the move by Spring 2014.

Thanks for all the replies.

Have I got a deal for you. I have to sell to go to FL (family issues). I have a nice 3-2 that is 2400sq ft. Garage, woodshed, carpark for 2 and workshop. Large home generator all on 4 acres and you can legally shoot in the back yard. Send me a PM if interested. I am in Cumberland county just 1mile into the county from Powhatan county. Much lower taxes and 28 minutes to 288 down Hwy 60. Quiet, lots of trees and good water. I am an IT specialist and we use Hughesnet Gen 4 and I have no problem doing remotes as well as updates to machines I am building.
