I've never been a "Glock Guy" but the more I use them the less I hate them. Actually my respect for the Glock continues to grow. That Tennifer finish is ridiculous, I want it on evrything. I shoot a Glock 26 more than well enough to feel quite comfortable carrying it for defensive use. That said I've been wanting an XDM 3.8 compact .45 for a long time. My Dad just brought home a Gen 4 Glock 21, NIB and said "here you go!!!" Completely out of the blue, I had been talking about wanting a .45 for awhile. I'm in the final throws of a nasty divorce that cleared out my small gun collection. I know it's a little heavier but I want that damn XDM! The 26 isn't going anywhere but a full sized Glock...IDK. I have small/medium hands and compacts just suit me well, the gen 4 19 felt great in my hand, I ccw compacts quite well...Would it be wrong to say thanks for the NIB Glock 21 and trade it for an XDM Compact .45? The 21 just seems a little big for my hands, we have a 26 and a 23, I love the Gen 4's but...really wanted the (black) compact .45. I have a HD pistol and the 26 is sweet but dang it! I'm pretty sure I'll love the 21, but have been wanting an XDM 3.8 Compact since they came out and as soon as that .45 version hit the market I was sold. Between the barrel length and the grip length, I don't think the 21 will replace the 26...thus I'm carrying 9mm and taking the 21 on dates to the range. The XDM with the short mag and shorter barrel would be about perfect for me. I know it's chunky but that doesn't bug me. It fits my hand well and my body size/type/hands carry and shoot compacts better than fullsize or Subcompacts...I guess I have a great gun, not sure the ergonomics are right for me, even with the adjustable backstraps. I read another comment somewhere, the guy was talking about the ergo's of the Glock and I'd have to agree ( just for my preference), the grip angle doesn't bother me a bit. the Gen 4 19's and 23's fit my hand like a glove, the big boys put the palm swell lower than my palm. I shoot my 26 without the Pinkie extension, prefer tucking my pinkie under the grip...After I break the seal on that 21 (hasn't happened yet) I think I won't be getting another handgun for a long long time...How to break the news...maybe take him to a gun store and fumble a 21 repeatedly and say WOW! this XDM fits great. I don't know. You'd be a little pissed if you bought yor son a great new car and he traded it for something else yeah? My Dad swears by Glocks. I like them allot, also like XD's, CZ's, Baby Eagle's- yeah I know-XDM's...lots of guns. I want a 1911 but want to wait it out and start with a quality striker which IMO The Glock is, the XDM is, many are. I should just shut up and shoot the heck out of the Glock I suppose. I just don't see it IWB out and about the way I do the XDM compact...I feel like an ingrate already. Price wise these are right around the same right?

You do know you live across the Interstate from the George Washington National Forest, right? Lots of hunting opportunities there.
Last I checked it's not many public hunting days and those that are are typically overrun by those using dogs.

What I haven't seen in this thread is what you intend to use it for?

If it's just target shooting, ya a Glock 26 really isn't the best choice. However, if it's CC, then the Glock 26 is an excellent choice and the Beretta not so much. Even though I do like Glocks for CC, the sub-compacts (e.g. G26) are a bit small and not the easiest to shoot. I prefer a G19 or G32. The only 45 Glock I like is the G21 with a threaded barrel. :) However, when I want to punch nice consistent holes with a solid feeling gun and a amazing trigger, I pull out my .45 Wilson Combat. Each tool is optimized for a particular task...

What do you want to do with this 9mm?

Visit some gun stores and gun shows and pick up/handle different brands of 9MM handguns (different models, too) to see what fits you hand the best.

I went through several models/brands and thought the XDM would be the "one." I bought two of them. A 5.25" first and then a 3.8" compact model. Turned out the 3.8" shot just as good a group as the 5.25" (who would have thought a compact short barreled gun would shoot as well as a long barreled, adjustable sight competition gun??) and the 5.25 just sits in the safe these days back in its box.

Then I made the "mistake" of picking up a S&W M&P 9MM at a gunshow one day and it fit my hand better than any of the other guns I'd bought over the years. I mean it fit. DId I say it fit. It fit like someone made it to fit my hand. The grip fit just right. My trigger finger is lined up with the trigger instead of being high (up on the slide - glock, or the frame above the trigger - SA). I bought one and I will buy more. There will be no more SA or Glock pistols here.

A different model my fit your hand better. To me, hand fit, how it feels when holding it/shooting it is very important.

I had to replace the part of the trigger mechamism in the S&W with an APEX kit but that kit is still cheaper than the kits for the SA's.

Good luck with whatever you pick. Make sure you practice with it enough to hit what you need to hit. Make sure you have the mind set to carry it with you when you need to have it. Make sure you have the mind set to use it as it needs to be used to protect yourself and your family if you ever face that situation.
