Can someone explain...(Remington 700)
Looking to purchase a Remington 700 and completely flip it. I love tactical looking guns and want this to be my next project. However, there is quite the large list of different sorts of Remington 700's. Can someone explain to me what I should/shouldnt be looking for? Once bought, I want to be able to put a JAE stock on it (if that helps). Thanks!

You can buy a brand new Rem. M700 with a heavy barrel, in several different calibers, with a parkerized finish and in a synthetic stock.
With all that, what else is there to do to it except adding the right scope and a bipod.
Heavy barrel - stiffer barrel can be better/more accurate due to reduced barrel vibration/harmonics.
Caliber - your choice basically. I like .223 as it is good for varmints, cheaper than most other calibers, easy to find reloading components for, etc.
Parkerized finish - non-reflective, tougher than blueing, resists surface corrosion better than bluing
Synthetic stock - won't warp and cause accuracy problems like a wood stock can due to absorbing moisture or drying out. Its easy to paint/camoflage. Its tougher than wood, more resistant to scratches, dings, dents (at least it doesn't hurt the appearance or function like it could with a wood stock)
Scope - based on what you want to do with it. Mine carries an old Bushnell 10X on it. I tried variable power scopes on mine but I noticed it was usually on 8X as the best combination of field of view, target identification, etc., so I put a 10X scope on it and it was perfect for my uses (ground hogs, crows and paper).
Bipod - I acually hunted several years without the bipod before finally buying one. For target shooting or varmint hunting in .223 caliber a bipod works just fine. Bipods are not the cure all, end all many people think (based on TV/movies and lack of personal experience shooting a high powered rifle on a bipod) but they are okay for recreational shooting.

Re: Can someone explain...(Remington 700)
All good comment above, but what is it that you are wanting to do with you rifle?
Any of the 700's are a great choice as you can build it to your specs, so are you lookintg at it for Hunting? Long distance shooting? Home defense against Zombies? or just plinking at 100 - 200 yards or so?
I have a Remington 700 SPS TACT AAC-SD chambered in .308 that I am very happy with. Here is the link to the remington site with the specs: http://www.remington.com/products/firea ... ac-sd.aspx
It has the 20” Heavy Barrel with 5/8-24 Threaded Muzzle and a 1 in 10” Rate of Twist that makes it great for shooting the heaveier bullets for long distance. It really depends on what your looking to do with the rifle, but I can tell you that this rifle is pretty heavy (7.3 lbs without scope and bipod) to hump around in the woods for any leangth of time just to be used as a hunting rifle.
But it will stack em right in on each other if that is what you want. Granted the furthest that I have shot it so far is out to 500 yards but it should comfotably reach 750 -1000 yards.

Re: Can someone explain...(Remington 700)
@Taggure, Looking for mostly long distance range shooting...maybe, and thats a very maybe, taking it hunting. I guess my main question was is there a great base model 700 that is good to build on. The SPS Tactical that you posted the link for looks great. Are you able to swap out stocks with that model? That may be a stupid question, however, I am just getting into bolt action rifles and know very little about them. Thats why I want it to be my next project so I can understand them a bit better. Thanks in advance!

Re: Can someone explain...(Remington 700)
The SPS Tactical linked above is actually the one I plan on ordering this week. You can replace the stock, it is a short action, so look for stocks that are also short action.
I'm planning on getting the MDT TAC-21 for mine.

you bet you can swap out stocks on any of the Rem 700's and it is a very easy rifle to make your own. you may want to look at the base SPS Tactical rifle if you want it for hunting as it will not be quite as heavy and can still reach out for the distances.
Here is a forum that is dedicated to the Remington 700's you might want to check out
http://www.700rifle.com/forums/
You will see all sorts of variations that have been created with the 700 on this forum and all of the different modles of the 700 have thier own area.
Enjoy

I will post a photo later this evening of mine now that I have it the way I want it.

Re: Can someone explain...(Remington 700)
things that make a good long distance gun, generally make for a lousy carry all-day gun.dooger52287 wrote:@Taggure, Looking for mostly long distance range shooting...maybe, and thats a very maybe, taking it hunting.
heavy long barrels, wide forarms, very light triggers etc... none of which I want on a hunting gun.
Also define long-range. 50yds, 500yds, 1000, more?
They are all quite similar.I guess my main question was is there a great base model 700 that is good to build on.
unless you get into re-barreling, truing up actions, blueprinting etc... but then your into some moderately serious gunsmithing, which it doesn't sound like you are going to do just yet.

Or find a an older used 700 and build from that - they are everywhere online. Did that once and it turned out very nice.
Re: Can someone explain...(Remington 700)
Have you given thought to caliber that you want to use? .308 is a good round and can reach the distances that you have talked about. 30-06 is anoter good round as well.you can get it in a smaller round such as .270 and .223 for varments and such
Look at this spec sheet for the 700 SPS Compact

Here is the Model 700™ VTR™ Desert Recon that looks interesting as well
You are limited to .308 or .223 in this model though.

Re: Can someone explain...(Remington 700)
I would say shooting at approx. 500-700 yards. 308 seems to be my best bet from what I am reading. Also, I would love to find it used to save me money. Anyone seen any used 308, 700's around?

nope all the LGS I know of have bare walls.
I'd start hunting on gunbroker.

Re: Can someone explain...(Remington 700)
I began looking on Gun Broker a few weeks ago for another pistol when my wife looked over my should, said, "that seems really sketchy to buy a gun online", and then searched Gun Broker on the Better Business Bureau and said it got a "F" from them. Soooo I have been banned from shopping there

Hey James
Here is a couple of photo of my Remington 700 AAC-SD for you to look at. Where are you located?

Sign up, find a rifle, get to work. I have two Remington 700's, a CDL in 7mm-08 with a nice walnut stock for hunting, and a Sendero II in 300 WinMag with a Bell & Carlson stock for really long range shooting. Which reminds me, I need to finish breaking in that barrel. Anyway, if you're ditching parts to make a super duper long range gun, find a .308 in a short action for cheap, get the nice stock, install a new trigger group, and have a better, heavy barrel installed.
