Visitors are supposed to allow security officials to check in weapons, Keith said, but Hester removed the gun from its case before personnel had a chance to handle it. The shotgun was laying flat on a table when it discharged.
Going to sell your gun but not look at it before leaving your house to make sure it's unloaded? I swear, this is as bad as forgetting your gun is loaded when you go to clean it and look at who gets injured and killed from that. It's not rocket science people!

One of those one-in-50-million, rare incidents. Timing is exceedingly unfortunate, though.

Sounds like he had uncased it and laid it on a table for inspection when it went off. Still a dumbass for not checking it even after he uncased it at the show.

I'm surprised they are not sure if they will be pressing charges.

Something smells fishy. According to ABC there were 5 injured in 3 states today at gun shows.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/hurt ... c-18260698

At the NC show, the a shotgun somehow discharged as the case was being unzipped.

In Indiana, a 54 year old gun owner shot himself while leaving the show.

In Ohio a gun dealer shot his friend when he accidentally pulled the trigger while inspecting the weapon.

Is there really that many idiots that go to gunshows?

Lets do background checks on all those involved and make sure they aren't plants to make gun owners look bad.... I love a good conspiracy. (Yeah, it's already been said...lol)

I was thinking the same thing. The timing is perfect, with all the gun ban hype and whatnot.

I would be inclined to look at the guys political background before filing charges.

If it was intentional, it is attempted murder.

Reading online that it was a police officer who discharged the shotgun while securing it. Did not clear it and zip tied the trigger.

The facts of the individual incidents make it highly unlikely that they were part of a conspiracy. Based on the published stories, every one of them was a negligent - not "accidental" - discharge caused by violating the basic rules of firearm safety. No firearm "goes off" by itself when being laid on a table, and I can easily imagine why the report fails to point out that the idiot had his finger on the trigger as he was laying it down, one-handed, on the table. But...

IF our culture had the same healthy, respectful, knowledgeable attitude about firearms as tools, widely owned and used by the vast majority of our population, and fathers who taught their children how to use these tools safely, as we had a hundred years ago, this stuff would not happen. Ignorance breeds fear, fear breeds ignorance, and ignorant people cannot handle freedom. Adams, Madison and Jefferson made this abundantly clear when they established freedom as the bedrock of the American system of self-government. This is why the media and educational establishments, both controlled by "progressives", are deliberately dumbing down our children and brainwashing them to be fearful.

As usual, the statists want to use this as an opportunity to lower personal standards of conduct, to constrain people who are responsible in the name of those whom they have caused to be unable to handle responsibility, all in the cause of expanding their control over the life of each and every one of us.

Because they fear us, the responsible, independent Americans.

Well don't necessarily rule out a conspiracy just yet. There are a lot of people that want to shut us down and will go to great lengths to see it happen. I know there is heightened awareness but when was the last time 3 incidents were reported in one weekend. Sounds like a 1 in a million chance to me. Not hard to imagine that at least one of these was a plant.

At the last VGCA Manassas show some dork was walking around with a live round asking if he could chamber it in sellers guns. OK maybe he was just stupid and trying to determine what caliber the round was (without turning it over and reading the stamping on the head) or maybe he was wanting to check the ease of chambering of the rifle or maybe his intent was to squeeze a round off to shut down the show. It is anybodies guess but luckily none of the vendors fell for it. Really a retired LOE does an accidental discharge. Thank God he is retired. Those that should know (LEO, FFL) get lazy and carelessness because they think they are experts and they don't have to pay attention to simple gun safety rules. I read on one of the forums here that a shop in NOVA was not allowing people to rack the slide on semi pistols because it makes scratches on the frame. I guess this is the type of stupidity we are dealing with these days. I think we all should make an effort to watch out for unsafe situations and stop them when we see them occurring and I really don't give a rats arse if it is a active duty LEO, your local FFL, your best friend, your father or whom ever it is. Who knows your life your life might depend on it.

On a slight departure I would like peoples opinion on the following. I am in the early stages of planning a series of small gun shows in the Virginia. I am thinking in the range of 65 to 150 tables. I know my timing sucks but I have been out of work for a time and really need to find a way to bring home some bacon. Any thoughts.

Having worked in home construction after High School, electrician, I can tell you lots of stories of framers shooting themselves, others, and having wars with nail guns. Most if not all were due to being dumb or just plain immature. One of my high school friends who got A's shot himself in the hand because he had tied back the safety and wasn't paying attention. Point is people get careless with all kinds of tools. A tool called a rifle or pistol is no different.

Still what amazes me is that this was in a gun case. I have loaded guns and my pistol is obviously loaded when I go out. However if I'm putting them into a case for travel purposes, I unload them. If they are in my home for storage, I unload them. The only time they are loaded is when I need that tool for immediate use. Defense or when I'm in a range lane for instance. I just can't imagine how dumb you must be to neglect to check a weapon you are going to sell/trade before you put it in a case. You see this as a main complaint from gun store owners on Youtube. Course I'm hopefully preaching to the choir here!

Oh and I would like to see statistics on discharges at gun stores/shows. I'd be willing to bet that this isn't a conspiracy, rather an awareness to look for a type of a new story. When a news story hits the National news you will see every reporter going out to find the same type in their neighborhood. Gives them a chance to have their piece hit the big time. That and your sub conscience is more likely to pick up familiar stuff as you scan through all the headlines. I'd be willing to bet this happens more often than we would like to think it does. Guns and nukes don't scare me. Stupid and radical people scare me!

It happened at the Salem Gun Show in 2009;
Police said David Jack Gold, 74, a gun dealer from Bland, was replacing the stock on his military-style rifle with his friend, Thomas Raymond Allen, 52, of Max Meadows, when the weapon went off and shot the floor. The bullet's impact sprayed bits of concrete into Allen's face and he was taken to a hospital for his injuries.

How many people have been shot while cleaning their unload gun? Humans do dumb things! :bangin:
