Went to the range today

Post by thekinetic »

Was at sharpshooters today trying my new 1911 out. I love my new gun but I still can't hit the broad side of a barn! :third:

The guns weight causes me to shoot low. So while I brought my M&P with me as well as my judge, I only hit reliably with my judge.

Any advice on keeping the gun on the mark and/or hitting the mark? I have noticed if I use my gun one handed I hit better, especially with the 9mm.

The GI sights were not the most "user friendly". You could try painting the front face of the front site.

I was able to take the MAG-40 class in Sept. Mas Ayoob started out with his 5 point checklist of firing a handgun. It helped me a lot! I found an article by him in Gun Digest from 2009. It spells it out pretty good. Give it a try.

Thanks Ralphola, that was great article. I'll have to try all that next time I go to the range. I can attest to the "smooth roll" because usually, when I'm not all hyped up about shooting a new gun, I do squeeze the trigger and thus do a little better than I did today. So hopefully knowing this will help me become more accurate! :D

I think it was the stance and the crushing grip that did it for me. Had a more stable platform and was able to control the recoil better! It was fun!

It sounds like you have things figured out but here's what I do, and only with my 1911. I have a bare-bones Rock Island and with my old eyes, cannot see the sights. When I did try using them, I would hit low. What I do now with success is cover the target with the muzzle and let'er rip.

Well considering I have a model 1911 close to the original, I'll give your method a try too. Considering how bad my eyes are it couldn't hurt, heck I use to not be able to see the rings on the target down range before I got glasses!
