Smith & Wesson M&P15-22

Post by jasonallen127 »

Hey guys, I just ordered a Smith & Wesson M&P15-22! I was saving up for one of the rimfire H&K MP5 rifles, but the giant fake suppressor, pencil thin barrel, inability to easily take the upper down for cleaning, and uuber expensive magazines gave me pause.

I went with the M&P15-22 MOE model (flat dark earth), and I plan to put my 10/22's old red dot sight on it (cheapie TruGlow red/green dot sight that holds zero like a champ) to co-witness with the MagPul flip-up irons. I bought a case for it, a single-point sling, and I have magazines on backorder at Midway, Brownell's, and a few other websites... we'll see who actually stocks them first, but I'll probably keep 'em all.

Anyone on here own a S&W M&P15-22?

Any must-have accessories you'd recommend? (Depending on how the stock trigger feels, I'm considering JP reduced power springs. Also, the Slidefire seems like it could be fun, but might get old for the price after a while.)

Any recommendations on where to find more magazines in stock with the magazine panic?

Also, I've seen vids online on converting the tall 10-round magazines to 25ish round capacity by drilling out the retaining pin (which is totally legal here in VA). Anyone here have experience doing that? Did it work?

Just recently purchased one for my daughter and we took it shooting for the first time last week and it was a blast! It is still bone stock and the trigger didn't feel to bad but we will see if my opinion changes in time.

I was in Richmond a few days ago at Green Top and they had 25 round S & W mags in stock for $29.00. I picked up a couple.

Green Top is very spartan now for any type of mags or AR stuff. Plus the place is a mad house nowadays.

Thanks for the info about the trigger! Glad to hear that it's good-to-go out of the box.

I called Green Top - they're out of anything AR-related in magazines. I'll just sit tight on my Midway & Brownell's orders. Thanks for the tip on there though!

I bought the Black M&P about a year ago . I haven't changed or added a thing. I would bet that 6,000 rds. have been shot , NOT one problem . I like it just the way it is. I bought a Camo M&P at the Showplace in October just because of the price. $450.00 for Rifle/4-25 rd. Mag. and 225 rd. box ammo. It is still in the box , I haven't shot it , but I have been thinking about accessories for it. :machinegun:

Green top was definitely a mad house! I had never been there or even heard of them. The wife drug me up to Richmond to go to Hobby Lobby so I Googled where I could drag her to and Gander Mountain came up so that is actually where I thought I was going. I guess Gander left and they moved in.

I am thinking of buying another 15-22 since the first one was for my daughter. This one will be for me to play and accessorize as necessary.

Ok, the M&P15-22 arrived!

First impressions:
-The whole rifle is very clean from the factory, only a light preservative oil on the surfaces of the barrel and the bolt. Hoppes #9 cleaned that off lickety split, and I used some light gun oil on the action.
-I bought this gun sight unseen, and was surprised by the amount of plastic on it, but it is a .22LR, and it feels completely solid... it's just lighter than an AR15 by enough that it's immediately obvious.
-The magazine well is a bit stiff, but the supplied magazine drops free
-The Upper/Lower Receiver fit is tight, as it should be
-The trigger is deliciously crisp with a clean break. I don't think I'll need to do any work on it
-I didn't know it came with a quick-detach single point sling - that was a cool surprise!
-I added my cheap TruGlow red dot sight onto the top rail over the action and zeroed it to cowitness the flip-up Magpul MBUS. Taking this to the range tomorrow to see how it prints on paper
-The supplied Magpul ladder-style rail covers are good to go and look very nice.

Thoughts on further kit:
-I am debating adding an angled foregrip and/or a magazine well grip, but I'm going to put 500 rounds through the rifle bone-stock as-is first. I want to keep this practical, as an AR15/M4 pattern .22 doesn't need to be any more "tacticool"
-I need more mags. I need a LOT more mags! I envision having 10+ ultimately so that I can bring them to the range already loaded.
-I have my Ruger 10/22 set up for really accurate, really long range .22 shooting. This rifle is destined to be my 5-to-95 yard plinker... so no additional optics needed unless the TruGlow red dot finally dies on me.
-This rifle will likely get a single point sling added to it in the near future.

More questions:
-Does anyone know if there's an ambidextrous safety lever for the lower receiver? I'm not a lefty, but some of my friends are - it'd be nice to give them a left/right option on the safety.
-Any recommendations on stopping the floor plate from rattling on the Magpul MOE grip?

This thing is gonna be a blast - I might post some pics and vids from the range tomorrow.

Range report:
This rifle kicks serious ass.

-I will not be adding a vertical or angled foregrip. The ergonomics are largely good to go and very close to my personal ideal "feel". I might add a magwell grip still, as I kept finding my support hand there - could be more comfortable that way?
-The trigger is good to go for now, but I would like it to be a lighter pull. I measured it at 6.5# currently.
-Co-witnessed cheap red dot sight + Magpul flip-ups = FUN at 25, 50, and 100 yards!
-A single point sling was a great addition to the rifle!

You could say that :)

I'd :gunporn: , but it's largely factory configuration except for my cheap red dot sight. :)

Took My Black M&P 15- 22 to Colonial Academy Range yesterday...Shot a 555 bx. LR 's . It's a lot of fun shooting the M&P at the range now that I have 14 Mags. :machinegun:
