Providence, RI Passes Resolution Banning Semi-Automatic Guns

Post by ShotgunBlast »

On Thursday night, the Providence City Council passed a resolution banning all semi-automatic firearms in the city. This resolution passed with 8 votes, 6 opposed and 1 abstention. This sweeping gun ban proclamation is an all-out assault on the Second Amendment rights of Rhode Islanders.

Rhode Island has a firearms preemption law that prohibits local governments from adopting gun control laws which are more restrictive than state law. Firearms preemption statutes are designed to prevent a patchwork of confusing, and sometimes conflicting, laws as residents travel from city to city.

Wouldn't it be nice if the ACLU brought suit? If they want to truly defend American Civil Liberties what better to defend than the Bill of Rights!

I hope those who voted yes have their guards armed with muzzle loaders. You get one shot. Better make it count.

The ACLU considers the 2nd to apply to a group. The state ACLU for RI might have a different policy, though. I'm not sure how the City Council figures they can ignore the various court rulings about common arms and individual rights. This'll be interesting.

I'm sure the hood rats will turn in all their Glock fo-tays now.

RI is a stinking hole of corrupt unions, corrupt Democrats, and smugly self-deluded left-wing extremists. When it finally collapses I might buy some cheap beachfront property there.

That pretty much makes the entire city a gun free zone.
I wonder how that is going to work out for them. I suspect a lot like Washington DC and Chicago.
Are all their police going back to wheel guns?

Here's the link to the resolution: http://council.providenceri.com/efile/138.
This resolution in itself (if I'm reading it correctly) isn't actually the one that would ban semi-automatic weapons. It still sucks, but it's really a resolution to support asking nicely for the state to give up their preemption right. Should that ever be available to them (if the preemption is lifted), I'd imagine they'd write nice little exemptions into the law for law enforcement. Though, it would be pretty damn funny if they forgot to.

Good business for you, bad for them haha. Maybe they'll get smart and move to a near, nicer area outside of RI.

Yeah before you parrot everything off the NRA page, just a couple things.

This resolution/request is not legally binding. It is the the Providence City Council asking the General Assembly to do so. Just like any other legislative body, it has to pass through the process before becoming a law and in effect a ban. Otherwise it's just a resolution no more effective than declaring Today is Donut Day in the State of Rhode Island.

Here's your source material.

-The resolution.
Pay close attention to line 1 page 2.

-A newspiece from the Providence Journal.

The NRAILA needs to get their stuff together, and put out facts. People need to stop believing everything they read and are told and go out and search out the facts themselves rather than relying in the NRA to do it for them.
