Finishing a teenage girl who's already down and incapacitated off with a head shot is NOT self-defense. If you think that's not murder, my advice is to forget you own a firearm until you've tyaken some courses that address these issues.
THIS.
I've seriously got the heebie-jeebies after reading this article (and the others on the incident).
Do what you need to do to defend yourselves, guys... but this isn't defense at all.
If you need to shoot an intruder after expending all other available options (including giving them a chance to retreat by telling them you're armed), then shoot them.
If they are shot but still a threat (let's say hypothetically they have a pistol and are trying to raise it after getting hit by gunfire), by all means shoot them again until they are disarmed or until they are incapacitated.
If they are bleeding out on the ground, and are incapacitated to the point that you can walk up to them and drag them around without them being a danger to yourself or others, don't fire a point blank shot into their head - that's 2nd degree murder (1st degree in some states).
As soon as there is an opportunity to do so, call the police - ideally before you confront an intruder if you have the time, if not, IMMEDIATELY when you and your loved ones are safe. Even if you just dial 911 and leave the phone off the hook.
From what I can tell, IF the homeowner identified himself as armed and instructed them to leave immediately and they did not comply, this guy 100% fired in self defense on the male intruder as he came down the stairs. The fact that his accomplice heard rifle fire (among .223 rifles, the Mini-14 has a rather loud report in my experience) and they still went down the stairs is an indication that intruder #2 may either have been a further threat, or that intruder #2 panicked and wanted to check on her cousin who likely was shot... the audio recording may tell the rest of that story. Up to this point his only mistake was not using a bigger caliber.
The fact that the homeowner relocated both bodies, then fired a headshot into the girl after she was no longer a threat and while she was gasping for air on the ground? That's not legally right, nor is it ethically right. Nor is waiting 24 hours to ask a neighbor for a lawyer without having contacted the police yet.
