Re: WRITE YOUR SENATORS!!!
For what little good it will do, here is what I wrote to Sen Warner earlier today...
Senator Warner,
I am troubled to hear you have changed your long held position on the alleged “Assault Weapon” ban, following the horrific shootings in Connecticut last week. If I understand the news report I heard, you said something about your daughter questioning you on why you shouldn’t ban what some call assault weapons.
A little about myself. I am a father and grandfather. I lost a son to a tragedy when he was nine, so I know a little about the pain of losing a child. It is gut-retching and something I would not wish on anyone. If there was something that could be done to eliminate the kind of evil that we witnessed last Friday, I would be the first to step forward and support it all the way.
Now, the original “assault weapons” ban only outlawed cosmetic items. It did nothing to ban weapons that could inflict the kind of carnage we witnessed last week. It was a “feel good” measure. And when I hear politicians say that the time “feels right”, I know it is political in nature, not aimed at getting to the root cause of the problem our nation is facing today. Legislation should be aimed at correcting a problem, not “feelings”. Should you vote for a measure that bans “evil black weapons”, and another outrage happens like Newtown, what will you then tell your daughter?
Other than guns, the common thread in all the recent shootings is mental health issues. Why is that not the first thing Congress is tackling? Why are law-abiding citizens and their legally purchased items being targeted?
Sir, I voted for you for several reasons. Your change on this critical issue because you can’t provide your daughter with a logical answer to an honest question troubles me, and calls my decision to vote for you in questions. The people of Virginia treasure their children as much as any other people in this country, and want them to be safe. Please, use your limited time and resources to legislate good ideas that will help end this violent outbreak. Don’t waste time on “feel good” legislation, that in the end, will do little to nothing to end the violence.

Re: WRITE YOUR SENATORS!!!
Dear Guys and Gals,
I wrote up a letter that I will be sending to Warner, Webb/Kaine, my congressman and my local state reps, too, and would be interested in any feedback. I know I'm talking to a brick wall with Warner/Webb/Kaine, but believe this letter will be considered by my congressman and state reps. My intention was to make arguing points against this potential legislation. Our jails are full of proof of why laws do not stop evil or those who will do bad things.
Dear,
It it such a sad thing that immediately after such a horrible senseless murder spree that there is a knee jerk re-action by gun control advocates to punish law abiding, responsible gun owners by attempting to have passed any legislation to restrict firearms from those legally allowed to own them. We constantly put the burden on the innocent and refuse to understand that a person evil enough to kill innocent little children are to blame and that these type of "people" will do this with any weapon. I should not need to remind you that murder is illegal, that drugs are illegal, and yet those who will do such things continue to do them despite laws restricting just that. Yes, an "assualt weapons" ban will prevent me from owning one, but it will not restrict any criminal who will want one. Just as a drug user will not be restricted from buying heroin tonight.
I want to say to you that I am a husband of a wonderful wife, a father to SIX amazing children that mean more to me than my life from age 4 months to 12 years old. Our children have been around firearms their entire life. I have consistently taught them that a firearm is not a toy, that it must be used with safety in mind at ALL times and that there are no do overs if they ever fail to treat a gun with the safety of everyone in mind. When they are old enough, if they so desire, I would not have the slightest concern if they desired to purchase an "assualt weapon" as they are part of the extremely large majority of gun owners and future gun owners who are responsible law abiding citizens who give back to their communities. I completely sympathize with every person who lost someone, knew someone or simply are grieving at Sandy Hook, or anywhere else in the world, who have lost children to evil. But the evil was not the gun, the evil was the person who committed murder in a no gun zone. I cannot imagine the pain, nor do I ever want to imagine the pain of losing one of my children, but I can say that a gun control law that bans an "assualt weapon" will not make me feel any more secure in my children's safety...and it shouldn't for anyone else either. Evil is what must be banned, and in all of human history that has never been successfully accomplished.
I beg you to please listen to reason and understand that any ban you try to force, or enforce, will only affect those who will follow the law to begin with. You can go right on down the line banning one thing after another, but any person interested in doing evil will do this evil with whatever they want. A bunch of words on a piece of paper will not deter them from committing their attrocities today, tomorrow or ever. I sincerely urge you as a voter that never fails to vote in any election to NOT pass new gun control due to this tragedy.
Sincerely,
