Opinions on Taurus PT1911?

Post by Riposite »

Anyone have any experience with the Taurus PT 1911? They seem very affordable but wondering about the quality. Are they a good starter 1911 or just a waste of money?

I have one in stainless. I love it, it's of solid construction and the fit on the parts is real tight there is no "give" when you grab to top slide and shake it side to side. In particular the trigger squeeze is gorgeous. The price is right and I've never had a stoppage of any kind over the course of 3 years and easily well over 1K rounds through it. However, my one regret is that I got mine with the underside rail and it just makes the pistol seem a bit heavy in the front. Otherwise I have no complaints, the shot groups are all good, and magazine commonality has not been a issue. It comes with all the bells and whistles at a fraction of the cost, normally I'd say you know "you pay for what you get" but in this case I'd gladly put it up against a Kimber any day and say this pistol is just as good as that one.

So yeah, 4.5 stars and a happy customer.

Mine was ver accurate and fun to have, but I traded it after about a year for a bigger toy. Still, would recommend it and their customer service that comes with it.

That is a heck of an inexpensive 1911. A buddy bought one for $539 which is nuts for a 1911! I didn't like the fit and finish and the magazine wouldn't always seat so the mag would fall out but that's fixable. It's hard to say if its a good investment, some guys love them. The pro reviews give it high marks whereas actual users typically complain over this and that.

I hate to use the term 'entry level' but if this is your first 1911, for the money heck, try it. If your budget ceiling is $600 you could always wait and save and, then buy a used Sig or something comparable. GunBroker is littered with them so odds of negotiating one into the mid 700's is realistic.
Find out what you're afraid of and go live there.

In my experience, the PT1911 is as good as most other production-run, non-customized 1911s, and better than some I've shot that had a "better" name brand and a higher price.

By "as good", I meant shooting and functionality. A lot of folks will tell you that particular manufacturing techniques used on some guns will cause long-term failures of components, etc. I'm not a gunsmith, a machinist, an engineer or a metallurgist. I just know if a gun does or does not work and whether i can hit a bull in the @ss with it. Truth of the matter is that I don't shoot any one gun enough for all that to be very relevant. Neither do 99.44% of the people who buy and shoot pistols in a non-military setting.

I don't have extensive experience with one, but I've put 100 rounds through my buddy's PT1911. My take on it was that it felt solid, went "bang" every shot, shot straight, and didn't burp on cheap UMC .45ACP ammo. As with all Taurus firearms, if you have a problem with it, send it back and they'll make it right! If .45ACP were a caliber I was interested in, I'd be considering between either the PT1911 or a Springfield Armory 1911 Range Officer model.
