Participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps, reached another high in September, according to new data released by the United Stated Department of Agriculture.
The most recent data on SNAP participation were released Friday, and showed that 47,710,324 people were enrolled in the program in September, an increase of 607,559 from the 47,102,765 enrolled in August.
The number of households enrolled in the program also increased from 22,684,463 in August to 22,973,698 in September, an increase of 289,235. The average benefit, according to the new data, was $134.29 per person and $278.89 per household.
Texas, California, and Florida were the states with the most recipients, the Agriculture Department reported.
The new numbers mean that an estimated one in 6.5 people in America were on food stamps in September.
In the 1970s, one out of every 50 Americans was on food stamps. Since 2001, spending on the program has quadrupled and doubled in the last four years.

Stop farm subsidies, and have farmers GROW food, and make it affordable.
Feed Americans before we ship food overseas.
Have people learn to eat healthy instead of fastfood.
Oh, there are methods, but few want to take them... The best road isn't the EASIEST!
And we live in a nation of "easy peasy, instant mac &cheesy".

Today's Lesson in Irony
The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever, to 46 million people.
Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because the animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves.
This ends today's lesson.

We lost a chance a the first step towards the cure on Nov. 6. Like any untreated infection, delay only makes it worse and more painful to cure.
I disagree with the dirigiste recommendations above. We do not need to "make" anyone do anything, and saying we do is just as bad as what the Left says in terms of unjustified abuse of government power and abuse of individual rights to liberty. We just need to stop all government programs that are not legitimate functions of government under the Constitution. Those who don't straighten themselves up will either have to find private charity or succumb to their Darwinian fate.

Don't forget the silly patent suits by Monsanto (et al) going after farms that were cross contaminated with GE corn. If the pollen blows into your field and the resultant kernels germinate, you've stolen their product according to them. Goodbye family farm, goodbye local grower.

How were those Monsanto suits adjudicated? I think an honest judge would chase Monsanto out of the courtroom.

Still headed to SCOTUS, last I heard. On a similar note, I understand this also happened to a "certified organic" famer. The defense lawyer apparently intends to demonstrate to the court that it is not in the farms best interest or business model to use GE seeds as they intend to stay "certified organic." Further, the contamination has substantially hamed the farm and may seek damages, etc. I don't know when a decision will be made on that case.

Food, being the most pressing human need (its not sex as some sociologists would claim) is the ultimate way to own someone, and in a dumbocracy, to get their undying support in the form of votes.
The need to eat and drink drives all human economic and social activity, if you remove that need (even temporarily) you essentially remove the core motive to work, and the will to work follows shortly after.
If you think this is cruel or "unchristian" see Pauls letter to the Thessalonians.

This is just semantics. The way you "make" someone work for his own living is to stop feeding him when he doesn't. You say toMAYto, I say toMAHto.

Semantics is the use of specific language to shape and win the debate and the battle for the public's heart and mind ("mind" used loosely when describing today's average TV-addled American). As such, it is critically important.

Yes, it is important. But not more important than content. At least not if you understand the issues.

Also noteworthy is the stigma/shame of using food stamps is long gone; now you should be proud of it!

Re: Over 15% of Americans now on food stamps.
One problem no ones sees with the public welfare system in our nation is way too generous. IN theory people can be really comfortable, especially those with no abmition, on the public dough. Take an illegal immigrant. Living in public housing and food stamps is like a king compared to mexico. People say illegals cant get that. They can in some states like CA. Also if they have an anchor baby that will allow them to get much of that stuff. Many of those anchor babies also grow up on the public dough. You combine what the gov gives you with what you make under the talbe at a restaurnt and taht is some good dough.
Now go to a place like detroit you have "people" in public housing, wic, food stamps. and so forth. The kids are hustling dope and we are feeding those same kids that might rob us or rape our wives one day.
I think food stamps need to be restricted on what they can buy. You on food stamps you should not be buying steak. You want steak and frozen pizza get a job. I would love to see it where they go to food banks and could get things like beans, rice, tuna, some bread and so forth. Maybe if it was not as comfortable people would actually try.

Re: Over 15% of Americans now on food stamps.
Just to clarity, it was an association of organic farmers who sued Monsanto, not the other way around. Damages are not an issue in the case because it is a suit for declaratory relief.GeneFrenkle wrote:Still headed to SCOTUS, last I heard. Cannot have you self-dealing! That's ILLEGAL in FTC trades, and transactions for STOCKS! Why would you have it for GUV'MINT BENEFITS?!?
