lizjimbo wrote:Doug...what you said is that the firearm is traceable to the original purchaser and that the ffl must keep records for 20 years. Sure sounds like "registration". I don't believe for one moment that the VSP firearm transaction center does not keep a data base. If some one from the VSPFTC will tell me otherwise I would appreaciate that greatly!

I had a SCAR 17 and 16. I also had a bunch of Glocks and a couple H&K pistols. Oh and a DDM4, but I sold everything when our government told me these dangerous tools can actually hurt someone. Apparently they grow legs and go on killing sprees.

Doug, thanks for posting that information. That clears a lot of stuff up.

This topic is very timely. Doug's point about possible confiscation is a point we address in the latest podcast episode, "The Case for the Private Face-To-Face Firearms Transaction".

This is why the option of the private sale must always be preserved.

Okay...so I gotta stop drinking the cool aid, huh? This is a synopsis of what has been said! The State Police use form 65 and say they destroy it...that they don't keep a record of serial numbers. Well I am not concerned about my whatever amendment it is that gives me a right to a "serial number". I could care less if the VSP knows the serial number of my gasoline generator or how many generators I have with different serial numbers. Did anyone on here ever see any ffl tear up the 4473 or sp65. Have you ever bought a firearm at wallys world...if so did you hit the delete key on the computer you used to fill out the 4473 after the sell was made. Maybe it is just me but I don't think walmarts records turn into static electricity after the manager walks you out the door. I am sure the VSP knows I have bought firearms...I even know that the BATF monitors internet traffic looking at private purchase and sales of firearms...it ain't that hard to do. Just go on vagt and see for yourself. People shouldn't kid themselves. For Gods sake the VSP knows what color your 1998 honda is!

Believe what you will. BTW, I'm selling tin foil hats pretty cheap.

The biggest point folks continue to miss, is that the SP-65, DOES NOT LIST a serial number or model or make. Simply how many of what type firearm you bought.

When I do the background the State Police do NOT get a serial number, ever, for any reason save one... When a multiple purchase form is filled out for buying more than one handgun in a 5 day period, that is the only possible way they would have the information.

They know the color of your car because you told the DMV what it was...

There really are big issues to be concerned about, this is nonsense, and I cannot force you to believe something. I do the work, I am an FFL, I am certain in Virginia at least this is BS.

The next firearm you purchase, I would be happy to do the transfer, and have you observe the entire process for yourself, until that time, I am afraid you are "drinking the kool aid", and I cannot help you.

Ya know...for the last time...I could care less about a dumb a... serial number. For God's sake, I am not purchasing a serial number...I am purchasing a firearm. So what...the SP doesn't know the serial number. Just a question...how much does a serial number cost anyway because I have never bought a serial number. Maybe next time I go to an ffl I will ask him what serial numbers he has for sale. BTW what caliber do those serial numbers come in. Do I need a concealed carry for a serial number or can I just remember it in my head. What if I get drunk and forget I am remembering my serial number...is that unlawful remembering of a serial number while intoxicated. Is that a semi auto serial number?

I was replying to your previous post, "The State Police use form 65 and say they destroy it...that they don't keep a record of serial numbers."

Simply stating that the serial number is not on that form, so even if the State keeps it for more than 30 days, it makes no difference.

Several posts have made mention of make, model, serial number being in a state police data base, yourself included. The point is, the State Police never receive this information, so how could they possibly have a database?

Also, it is perfectly legal to sell firearms in face to face transactions, so how would they possibly track that?

Not sure why you are so riled up, not trying to frustrate you, just keeping facts straight, instead of all this tin foil crap, and " a friend said" stuff, so prevalent on the interwebz.

This horse is dead, buried, dug up, and reburied, so I am out. Believe what you will, I have given facts, and hope it helps the masses.

Private sales do keep information out of the hands of people that you don't want to have it. But some private sales will require a bill of sale. Someone will know who you are and exactly what you bought. Private sales are easier because you don't need to go through a background check...it doesn't mean you don't have to identify yourself nor have your information written down on a bill of sale. FFL sales do not and never will not require information to be communicated to BATF or SP. There is a big difference and the point I have been trying to make...yet I am the one drinking the koolaid if I state the obvious...that is ffl sales are chiseled in stone. Why do you suppose that if you sell a firearm that you purchased from an ffl and that firearm gets used in a crime...somehow you are eventually visited by the investigators. 2 + 2 will always equal 4 no matter how often you deny it! I'm not saying don't buy a gun from gander or your favorite ffl...but let us not kid ourselves thinking all that information that is written down about a particular purchase turns into telephone static the moment we get approved and make the purchase.

Anybody need more info on this topic so it can be put to rest just go to the ATF website and read the application to obtain an ffl then read the requirements and regulations that an ffl is required to follow.
