Got My Ruger 10/22... Now What?
Now that the Thanksgiving madness is over, it's time for me to think about what I want to do with my new 10/22. It has the nice wood stock so I wasn't thinking anything "tacticool". Maybe use it as a solid tack driver. Maybe go to an Appleseed event and work on my marksmanship. Maybe a varmint hunter (but I live in the burbs so I don't see that happening).
This is my first rifle and I'm going to give it a good cleaning this weekend and take it to the range this week. If you have any suggestions on specific accessories I should use with this good lookin rifle, I'm all ears!

Here are the four mods that I consider almost mandatory:
1. Volquartsen hammer/spring kit: reduces trigger pull from 7l lbs or more OEM to 2-2.5 lbs.
2. Extended magazine release.
3. Automatic bolt release (enables bolt to close merely by pulling it back from the locked position. There are good instructions on the web to modify the bolt release DIY.
4. Tech-Sights: M1-style peep sight. Much improved accuracy compared to the OEM buckhorn.
A great source for these is rimfiresports.com in Ashburn.

Shoot it, shoot it a lot. Then ask yourself what you don't like and go from there. It's nonsensical to me to make change for change sake. It's your rifle, customize it to meet your needs over time by discovering and solving issues. Doing it this way will prioritize the changes, better manage expenditures, allow you to grow with the rifle, and make it into somethimg truly your own.

I really really love volquartsen trigger kits. Faster shooting and lighter trigger pull. Also adds the bolt release and the extended magazine. Also pick up some BX25 round magazines they run great! Congrats on the purchase your gonna love it.

I do like the bolt release option. Trigger feels light already. Is there something you can do to keep the bolt open on the last shot fired?

great advice. I know it's tempting to run out and slap on accessories, but I agree with the above statement. shoot it and decide what YOU want and need for your situation. That way, you can appreciate the upgrades and save money as well!GeneFrenkle wrote:Shoot it, shoot it a lot. Then ask yourself what you don't like and go from there. 25 round magazines are gonna be a must. I hear Ruger finally put one out themselves. Any other brands to look at? I heard some brands are good and others are junk. I saw two Butler Creek magazines that snap together. That's pretty cool.

The Tactical Innovations mags I also hear are good there a little more expensive. The Bulter Creek Steel lips are supposed to be alright also but if you have the option I would go with the factory ruger mags.ShotgunBlast wrote:25 round magazines are gonna be a must. Re: Got My Ruger 10/22... Now What?
I heard there was a way to mod a bolt hold-open but I have never seen one in the flesh. Here's a link to one: http://www.cstmtech.com/absk.html. Of course, it requires special magazines to activate the bolt lock.
From the threads on the ruger and rimfire forums, it seems that only Ruger OEM mags are truly reliable. I don't have any others, so I don't know. The OEM BX25 mags work fine.
And Gene's advice is right on. I came up with my list of mods after shooting about 600 rounds at my first Appleseed. Yours may be different. On my second 10/22, I installed a scope and then found I had to change to a longer stock to get the correct eye relief, but the OEM stock works fine on my iron-sights 10/22.
I shot my first Rifleman score with the stock trigger, too. But the 2.25 lbs upgrade makes accuracy easier for me.

Re: Got My Ruger 10/22... Now What?
GeneFrenkle gave some really good advice. The modifications, if any, that you need to do to your rifle depend entirely on what you use your rifle to accomplish. There are really good reasons NOT to want a two pound trigger on a hunting rifle that's used in the brush. The same goes for a 25 round magazine hanging down and catching brush, plus the long magazine is not good for shooting off of sandbags. There are entirely different requirements for a range/target gun, a hunting gun and a varmint shooting gun. Enjoy the fine rifle that Ruger produced, then make it more adaptive to YOUR style of shooting, not somebody elses.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll hit the range then figure out where I want to go next. First thing is to get a few magazines. Found a review for this HC3R magazine and it looks like it has a lot of neat features while maintaining reliability.
Bud's Gun Shop has them for $30 so that's not too shabby.

25 round magazines are a "REQUIREMENT" because you'll spend all day reloading 10 round mags.
Ruger's are A-1! As are Tactical Solutions! Own both, think VERY highly of them!
Butler Creek? Meh! Stay away from it.

Re: Got My Ruger 10/22... Now What?
Not to be arguementative, but that depends on what you do with the gun. If you're squirrel hunting, you probably won't shoot ten rounds in a day. If you're plinking you could shoot a few hundred. If you're practicing your mall ninja routine you could shoot a few bricks. I hunt with mine. I do have one 25 round magazine, but seldom use it. I have several 10 round magazines. I normally have one loaded spare with me when I hunt. I seldom use it.Reverenddel wrote:25 round magazines are a "REQUIREMENT" because you'll spend all day reloading 10 round mags.

I have the factory wood stock and a folding one that make it look 'tactical' whatever that means
I still prefer the wood one
What do you think?

The wood, definitely, for me. But I'm a little old fashioned.

Re: Got My Ruger 10/22... Now What?
Was finally able to get to the range. What a solid piece of equipment. I can see why they asked how many boxes of ammo I'd like to purchase.
I think some high cap mags are gonna be a must. Also I don't like the stock sights. The front sight to me doesn't stand out enough and I think the back sight is too small and I don't get a good picture. 15 yards out and my shots are all over the place.
I also need some recommendations on something to de-fog my shooting glasses.

I think I'll add the automatic bolt release to my list. Would definitely make things easier. Looks like it's back to spending money.

The auto bolt release is something you can DIY for free if you are handy and have a Dremel. There are youtubes to show you how to do it. If you want to buy one, at least it's one of the cheaper parts.

Oh, as much as I like breaking out the Dremel, I'll go to rimfiresports.com that you recommended and buy the part for like $10 and drop it in. lol
