I am not from California....originally, .I am from TX, the "cali" is part of my name, my husband is Italian. They are originally from Palermo, I grew up on a ranch in s. TX, knowing that the calf in the field would be my hamburger next week. It did not give my callouses on my heart but rather gave me respect for life snd understanding of my place in the food chain.


I don't live in the desert....so my bug out plans do not include desert living. I live in VA, so water is not a worry and game and wild food is abundant. If my family is driven from its home, we will look to head west towards the mountains.

If I lived where I grew I grew up in TX, I still remember how to generally find water and wild food in that environment too. Mesquite trees are abundant and live oaks often grow near water sources.

My family has survived the Norman invasion of Britan, the first twenty years of jamestown, the american revolution, the Texan independence war, the civil war, and the depression. Tradgedy surely can come, but have faith, be smart, and plan a little. Have a care for the next generation. I should note that most of my family (the ones who did not die in battle) lived to ripe old ages of 80+ years.

It's just my opinion, but I doubt if ten percent of the U.S. population has ever felt hunger. I'm not talking about "I'm starving, let's go to McDonald's", I'm talking about "I haven't had anything to eat in five days, that bug is looking pretty good". Knowledge of what plants can be eaten and what will make you sick doesn't suddenly appear in your brain. Crops don't grow overnight. People don't suddenly remember how to set a snare or hunt game. As long as the primary concern of public attention is what drunken and/or drug crazed movie star/starlett is being locked up this week, there's no time or inclination to learn any "menial" skills. 200 years ago children could provide for themselves much better than most adults can now. It was a way of life that was known and not a hobby or special project. Today we have to take time from some other endeaver to learn the needed skills for survival, and that will never happen on a majority scale unless it becomes neccessary. Then it will be too late, the free ride train will already have left the station!

The sad part about all of this, I know we're gonna be okay those that prep... But there will be mass deaths, and I suspect some serious lawlessness.

Katrina was the "learning ground" for survivalists. Using that as a process, getting the helloutta dodge isn't an option, you have to have some organization. Books, and practice is great, everyone should try a weekend without anything. It's kinda scary but very much a eye-opener.

I think a lot of people got that eye opener this past summer with that windstorm. My wife and I were returning from vacation when it happened. We had only been in our new home for a couple of months and were not very well prepared. Made for a miserable week.

After that we made getting prepared a top priority. We have spent a lot of time talking and planning for a myriad of different situations. I feel if something happens again it'll be a different story.

Ok, so that everyone as a measure of foraging knowledge. Dandelions are always edible, the whole plant is. Acorns are always edible. Split and soak them to get the tannis out, usually for a day or two. . Wild onions are abundant, but the plant must both look and smell like an onion or it is not edible. If it does not smell like an onion DON'T EAT IT. Rose petal are edible if they have not been sprayed with herbicides.

Don't die of hunger in a field of dandelions! Would I want to eat them always...of course not, but they could cover a meal or two to keep you on your feet till you find better eats.

Alotta Sicilians, I'm partly descended from the DeMarcos of Palermo.

I still maintain order will be restored, but in what capacity I do not know. Your power hungry local politicans may make your town a literal fiefdom of theirs, or (ideally) the state government will survive and life really wont change that much once the dust settles.

The truth is governments collapse rather frequently and widespread anarchy is not the norm.

Edit to above: the major cities will be hellscapes. The rest of the country? I dont think so much at all.

well he is minus on one point....no "crackers" are coming to the hood to put people on trucks. Us suburbanites/country folk will be happy to let the inner cities keep to themselves. But yes we are training our kids on gun safety and when of appropriate age marksmanship.

I have "NG" friends who are being "activated" in January for "Possible civil unrest".

I have LEO friends who are being told of "Vacation blackouts" in January because of "possible problems".

That's the kicker. Even if Obama loses there's still over two months of him being in office. A lot can happen in that time.

I didn't say it would be legal...but if he (or anyone) tried to appoint himself king of America, I don't think that individual would last long. By operating completely outside the law he/she pledged to uphold, the usurping despot would have deprived himself of the protection of it.
