The rifle is a CMP Service Grade. The receiver S/N is in the 386xxxx range, which dates in to late 1945.newdovo wrote:That is a nice looking gun. What "grade" did you get? Field grade, service grade, correct grade? I've read the descriptions on the CMP website, but haven't really had a good feel for what the various grades of M1 would look like.

Congrats on your M1. Sweet looking rifle. The CMP is definitely the way to go!
Re: My new M1 - Pics Finally!
A few pics of my M1 I took today. I rubbed a few coats of Tung Oil into the stock and used a grease pencil to fill in some of the markings/letters because.....well, because I like it. lol If the Garand Police ever show up I can always remove it.
My neighbor, who owns a farm adjoining mine and is a gun collector himself (has a great 450 yd shooting range) stopped by tonight and gave me a full clip of black-tipped 30.06 armor piercing cartridges, complete with the little cardboard protector. Says its been in his family forever, great-uncle brought back from WW2, and as long as I promised not to shoot it it was now mine! It will be perfect for the display I'm building.
In the meantime my ammo has shipped so the real shooting is about to begin....
