acquiring a handgun through a private sale at 18 years old

Post by brendts »

Hello, I understand it is completely legal for me to buy a handgun at age 18 through a private sale but is there anything else I need to be concerned with? I am planing on trying to find sellers at the next Nation's Gun Show at Dulles Expo Center where I have seen people selling before. It is not the legality I am concerned with necessarily but I don't want to get hassled by anyone who is unfamiliar with the law. Any advice would be very helpful!

Also do people generally have a problem with selling to non CCP holders or people under 21? (encluding stores and FFLs just private sales)

You may run into some people who don't know the law and think you have to be 21. You can buy it from a private person at 18, and you can carry it openly as well.

if someone does hassle you walk away, or basically ignore them. good for you getting something that you have a constitutional right to. just watch for undercover LEO that are trying to trap someone. as long as you stay with in the law there is nothing they can do. don't try to hide anything

remember it is against the law for you to buy ammo at your age. you will have to tell them it is for a rifle or you can get a guardian to give it to you. i know how stupid it is to have a guardian at 18.just one of those stupid anti laws we need to change

oh, and BTW join the VCDL, every gun owner should

18 you are good to go to buy through a private party and to OC in VA. I will say this tho both of you have to be VA residents to keep it legal other then that the chp/voters card or bill of said is up to the parties involved not required by the state to be legal. I personally would want a BOS to cover my ass if I was buying encase it came back stolen.

as "heyrakes" stated join the VCDL they do so much for our gun rights in VA other then that have fun and stay safe

Agreed on the Bill of Sale. Be ready for people to have no idea you can buy a handgun at 18 and don't waste your time arguing with them. As an 18 year old handgun owner myself I wish you good luck!
