So apparently New York City mayor Bloomberg got his wish to BANNING sodaa over the 16 oz. size within theaters, restaurants, fast foods (no more Big Gulps in 7/11's), cafeterias, and anywhere that prepares food.
So I guess now Goverment can control, or think they can, what we consume (almost sounds like prohibition like). Glad to know this - also glad I'm not a citizen living in state of New York because I got a feeling this'll spill outside of city walls. People in the thousands are signing petitions though which is a good sign that not everyone there is stupid enough to believe that Soda alone will make you fat.
Go on a step further NYC and Ban high-fat and protein substances. I'm sure body builders and athletes will love you for that!

Soda pop has been around for over 100 years. The so-called "obesity epidemic" has been with us for 10 or 15; or roughly since we started having "latchkey" kids whose mommas and daddies both work so they come home and sit in front of a video game eating cheetos and drinking kool aid until momma comes home with fatburgers and greasyfries from McDonald's because she didn't have time to cook. When's the last time you heard a mother say, "you kids go outside and play"? Did a day in your life as a kid EVER go by when your momma DIDN'T say that?
In addition to that, when they went from using the Metropolitan Life Tables to the new BODY MASS INDEX, something like 15 or 20% of the people in this country became "obese" OVERNIGHT because they'd changed the definition of what OBESE was! I understand that according to the BMI tables, Brad Pitt is obese.
We eat too much of the wrong stuff while we sit on our asses in front of a TV or computer from infancy to dotage, but the "obesity epidemic" is all the fault of the bad old soda people. HORSE HOCKEY, I SAY!

For the most part, my mother never had to say that; I was already out there. Besides, we had no TV, much less video games.
My friends mother was good for sending the kids outside. She'd chase us out there if it was raining. Time outside was strictly enforced.

We throw our outside everyday. If it's not pouring rain or freezing I want them out out out....minimum 1.5 hours. 2 -3 hours much better. Kids need outside, fresh air,and to learn how to entertain themselves.

I can honestly say that I have never had a Big Gulp or any LARGE Soda of any kind...So I'm not all sugared up...Just sick of STUPID F_____G LIBERAL's who want to take away all the RIGHTS WE AMERICAN.s enjoy...There are enough other much larger problem's they should be concerned with.
I heard on the radio that the ban doesn't affect supermarkets or most convienence stores. So big gulps will be selling like hotcakes. Everyone will need their sugar fix.

Well, part of the problem is that people - and parents for their kids - want immediate gratification and have no self-control. Chug those government-subsidized HFC syrup drinks all day at 240 calories with no exercise, and yeah, you gonna get fat.
That all said, don't tell parents what they can eat, or what their kids can eat. Freaking pisses me off. Better, some fat slob gets that way and can't work any more, then I gotta pay for him to get medical care. Freaking pisses me off. Then, the kids gotta have subsidized lunches since the parents have no money since they are too fat and screwed up to work, so I gotta pay for them to eat. Freaking pisses me off. Meanwhile, some ivory tower SOB is getting his meals cooked by a special cook paid for by the taxpayer. Freaking pisses me off.

A lot of the parents and there kids I know are like this.. shame..
now I admit I'm a former latchkey kid myself.. but my mom (single parent) always had a rule.. get out.. go play out side.. no tv until 7

My belief is that you get these mothers nowadays that either want to starve themselves during pregnancy and eat wheat grass, so the fetus is not exposed to stuff; or the mother eats nothing but processed food loaded with chemicals so the fetus is exposed to nothing but toxins. Then the baby is born and is sheltered from everything and as a result, bam! allergies.
I actually had a neighbor who would restrict what her daughter ate. She was only allowed 1/2 piece of toast and never allowed PB since she was "allergic". The reality was the mother was mortified the girl would become obese since PB has "fat OMG".
We've become a nation of imbeciles needing to be parented throughout life, and obsessed with form over function.

BMI is utter friggin nonsense. As a medic I sometimes got stuck doing weight checks in the Army, the dudes with bodybuilder physiques would have failed since muscle is heavier than fat.
Think the geniuses in charge of PT would have factoried that in, but no. Seemed wrong to me that soldiers who kept fit and happened to be short enough to be "obese" would be denied promotions, so I frequently forgot to wear my glasses and the scale numbers were all fuzzy, so I just wrote down what I thought I saw.
