Breaking In My New Kel-Tec 9mm

Post by ShotgunBlast »

Picked this up at the Richmond gun show as an entry-level carry gun. Cleaned and lubed it pretty good and got to head to Dominion Shooting Range in Richmond with the wife for ladies night. People on the Kel-Tec forum say this is not a gun to take to the range and shoot a few hundred rounds and they are right! We were done after splitting a bag of 50 between the two of us.

I got a few groupings that I'd consider good with their house reloads. Just started at three yards out to see that it works. In the future, what's a good distance to practice at? Dominion is good for up to 25 yards, but I don't plan on using this at those distances. I'm thinking 10 yards or so for what I plan on doing?

Anyways, here are some pics. I'd prefer the PF-9 with the chrome slide, but for the price you can't beat black on black. Especially since it'll be in a holster over 90% of the time and out of view.

I'll try to keep it away from boat trips, but accidents happen all the time.

According to the FBI many years ago, the average defensive shooting was at 21 feet (7 yards) so I'd train at 7-10 yards most of the time, but also devote some time to longer range (15-20+ yds) to very fast close range (3 yds and in) to make sure you can do it if needed.

I agree with RocKor. As a former cop & Instructor most incidents, according to updated stats, are 7-10 ft. I train my students in 10 ft increments out 20 ft. Then throw in some 25 yard. Close in is the only time a civilian should ever have to draw, or use their weapon, and that's strictly to protect him/herself. Law enforcement officer have enough trouble shooting at distance, insert NYPD here, and that's with training.

I've heard the rule of 3s; three yards, three seconds, three shots. not that you shouldn't train out further, even out to 50y maybe useful to you, but the 3s is the typical self-defense scenario for us civilian non-LEO types.

Tell that to this guy http://deadlinelive.info/2012/08/07/arm ... -a-pistol/

There is no magic distance to which you will never have to use your gun. Practice and practice often I believe a bike cop connected with a mass shooter at IRCC 70 yards? Granted these people were protecting others but you never know what could happen. Just never lock yourself into on scenario and then end up feeling the hurt if things go somewhere you would have never predicted.

I had a PF9 and carried it everyday for a year. Put many a round down range with it just decided that I did not like to shoot it. It was uncomfortable, snappy, and pinched my finger on the trigger. All in all mine was reliable but one had to go to make room for the new Glock 19. It drew the short straw. Good luck with it.

I have been looking at The Kel Tek line of 9mm for several months...Got to shoot a couple of clips in a PF 9 that a buddy bought yesterday. I thought that it shot great and was very comfortable to handle . Trigger pull was a little harder than I prefer , but will get better with use. :packin:
