Hunting on MCB Quantico

Post by RickK »

I'm a hunter new to the area and a friend of mine suggested that I look into hunting on the Marine Corps Base in Quantico. I've been to the website and even called the game check station for additional information (no one answered the phone) but I still don't know where to start. Has anyone hunted on the MCB? If so, would you mind describing what I need to do to get permission and access? Thanks in advance.

Hey Rick, welcome to the area. I also just moved here from WA state and live just outside of the gate at Quantico. I'll also be hunting on the base. I took the bowhunter education course to hunt on Fort Belvoir and they have a qualification requirement, you have to shoot three arrows into a 6 or 8 inch circle at 20 yards with your broadheads. I believe Quantico has the same shooting requirement but I don't think your required to have the bowhunter education course. They do accept the shooting qualification from Belvoir at Quantico. Here is a link that may help you. Where you coming from?

Hi Machias.
Thank you. It looks like I've found the right person to talk to. I'm coming from MA and I can't t tell you how excited I am to be in a firearm friendly state. I took the VA hunter safety course two weeks ago and I registered for the same bowhunter safety course in September. Thanks for the link. It says I can fullfill the shooting requirement during regular hours. Any idea what those are? And once I pass, then what? The site says I apply on line for a permit but once that happens, do you know how you get assigned a location? Do I just show up on the morning I want hunt and hope there is a free spot? Is a new location assigned to you every day? I appreciate any insight you may be able to provide.

Please be cognizant that during the firearms seaon you are only allowed to use a shotgun and slugs. Shotgun must have a plug to limit the amount of rounds to three. As far as i can remember, you cannot use a muzzleloader during muzzle loading season, only during firearms. Quantico follows all regs according to Stafford County including buck and doe days. You have to take a safety course before you are allowed to hunt. Try and do it before you pick up your area passes.

Quantico offers some of the best hunting areas in NOVA. They have everything to deer, bear, turkey, and one year an elk was spotted although not in the last ten years. Be mindful that the area that you want to hunt might be closed due to ongoing training. Get yourself a map from the game check station as well as a topo map of Quantico if you can find it.

Follow all rules and regs when hunting the Marine Base lest you get banned, and its very easy to get banned. Good luck and happy huntng!!
Look unimportant, the enemy might be low on ammo.
