Do you think the average thug is going to have that kind of situational awareness on initial contact? I figure they already have enough between their heart pumping harder and trying to stay focused on robbing the joint or something. If they're already into the act and start scanning the room and you haven't done anything by then, then I figure you'd be a target if they see you're carrying.

Every situation is different I admit. "Average" is a wide range these days. At the lower end you have the folks who have watched too many movies and believe everything Hollywood has fed them and then you have the folks who've lived it since they were children. A LEO acquaintance put it best.. " Avoiding the bullet with your name on it is unavoidable. You only need worry about the ones addressed to "resident" "Training reduces the risk of that piece of junk mail finding it's way into your head"
I'd imagine the best advice is to be ready for anything when you accept the responsibility of carrying a side arm. Carrying means you take responsibility for your life and the lives of those around you since you could either preserve or extinguish those lives at a moments notice should you choose (or not to choose) a particular action. Just as a police man/woman could. We all look at it a bit differently.
Carrying either openly or concealed is a personal choice that only you can make ShotgunBlast.
I hope I helped.

OC would be good because I have sensitive skin and the constant rubbing might chafe but would let people know I have gun. Then in a situation someone might see I have a gun and then expect me to do something or otherwise draw the attention of some miscreant.
CC would allow me in a situation to pick a moment or simply go unnoticed. But, like above, would be uncomfortable.
Either way I'm not going to act different becasue I have a gun. I'm not going to be an ass but I'm not going to be mr. smiley either. If I'm having a bad day or a good day it makes no difference if I have a gun or not.
Problem solved.

Re: CC or OC For New Carriers?
I prefer concealed carry. I don't want people to know I have a firearm. I am also not conflict adverse, and 1) carrying concealed means less chance of someone saying, "O M G HE HAD A GUN!" and 2) allows me to take control of the situation and calm things down without the gun being an elephant in the room.
My fiancée says that even the couple of times I have flashed when conceal carry, most people have done a double-take but then just went on their way. She thinks people would assume I'm LEO of some sort.
Speaking of fiancée, she is going to open carry to the event on Thursday. But as soon as she can (becomes a resident after we're married!), she's getting CHL classes and we're taking joint training.

Caleb, can you cite any examples of where a criminal targeted an individual who was OC as victim #1?
Just curious as I see that argument a lot, but no one seems to be able to give any examples of it.

Re: CC or OC For New Carriers?
I can cite a personal experience of my own, wherein a confrontation was avoided because I was OC'ing. I had a group of thuggish folk start in my direction with a vibe of ill intent. When they realized that I was armed, they did a 180 and headed off in the other direction. They never got closer than 15 feet to me.Yarddawg wrote:

Seems to me that the guy who had his gun taken should have been a little more vigilant with his gun. I wonder where, on his person, he had it. I keep mine on the front of my body. You can still try to take it from me, but it won't be a complete surprise.Chasbo00 wrote:Here is a recent one from the Richmond area.Yarddawg wrote:...but no one seems to be able to give any examples of it.
