Update on my fair-to-middlin' good idea...............

Post by dorminWS »

Somebody told me they expected an update. Here 'tis:

As I posted back in July, I've been working on a place to put pistols that's better than trying to pile them in a standard gun safe. Lucked up on something called a "note, card and check file". With the plywood partitions I added, each "slot" in this thing will take most auto pistols. The pistol shown in the box is a standard 5" 1911. It would also take revolvers, but I added the 3/4" blocks to the middle partition to give more bearing for the barrels to rest on, and that may have screwed it up for revolvers - I tried my Taurus Judge and its frame was about 1/4" too long to drop in. The Taurus may be longer than normal because of that big, long cylinder, though. Regular revolvers may work OK. The long side of each slot has room for manuals, documentation, barrel wrenches, magazines, etc. The drawers I don't put partitions in will be good for knives, ammo, etc. Each drawer will hold 10 pistols. Drill-proof locks and 1-hour fire rating for paper contents. A pistol as big as a Desert Eagle will go into a slot if you reverse it in the slot. Pretty fussy and meticulous on the fabrication, but all in all, a pretty good outcome for a weekend woodbutcher, IISSM. Now all I have to do is get it into my gunroom. The feakin' thing must weigh something like 600-700 pounds.

Correction: Each drawer will hold 20 pistols. Two rows of 10.

When you first talked about it I wasn't really getting it but know it makes a lot of sense! Nice setup!
