"Moldy" S&W 915 - What's it worth?

Post by Wingandaprayer »

I have a friend that has a "moldy" S&W 915. Her husband had stashed it under the kitchen sink. She found it last week and wants to get rid of it. I have not seen the gun, but she descibes it as "moldy."

I am trying to get an idea of the value of the gun. I know it is difficult based on the limited information. I am assuming (alway a dangerous thing) that the barrel has rust, but I have not yet been able to confirm that. I am thinking $250 - $350 depending upon the barrel and overall condition (after a thorough cleaning).

Anyone have an idea of the cost to have it cleaned and checked out by a gunsmith?

Thanks,
Paul

If it's rusted and such I wouldn't pay more than about $150. The gun can be had for $200-$300 new.

Although it has an aluminum frame, the 915 has a lot of steel internal parts. Under a sink storage of steel parts is a formula for rust. It would be extremely hard to determine it's worth without a complete disassembly, cleaning and evaluation. It was designed as a cheaper verion of S&W's 5904, so it may not be worth what a gunsmith would charge to do the eval. I'm not trying to be discouraging, but if it were me, I'd wipe it down as best I could and take some pictures. Post the pictures and ask for about 200 or best offer. You'll probably get some low offers, but that would be something to at least consider. By the way, MAKE SURE IT'S NOT LOADED!!!

O and if you don't want to buy it I totally will for $150 even maybe $200 if it's in better condition than I think.

Never pass up a good deal! Even if the thing is rusted and has a free parts that need replacing I love a good project. Sounds like an excuse to by more tools!

I understand completely. If I had more time, you might have a little competition for it. I hope that you and the lady that wants to get rid of it both come away happy.
