Thanks for sharing! Developing good habits from the beginning should help prevent these kinds of things from happening, but it's always great to see articles like this from time to time.

Good article, but I don't have much use for NRA Rule # 3. If I followed that rule, I'd be walking around with an expensive club.

I have no clue who Jeff Cooper is, but my father taught me gun safety by a similar rule set.

These are almost exactly how my father taught me as well. The only thing additional he used to tell me about while handling his 92F was "if you see red, you're dead." in reference to the safety. I've taught my wite the same rules as well. I figured if it worked for someone as thick headed as myself it'll work for someone intelligent like her.

Basic basic basic gun handling instructions, but sometimes we all have to get back to the basics and fine tune our practices.

At the risk of sounding like Bill Clinton, it depends on what use means. The rule says; "ALWAYS keep guns unloaded until ready to use." When I'm carrying a pistol in a holster for self defense, it's in use and when I place a pistol in a nightstand for home defense, it's in use too. I don't put loaded guns in my safe and I don't carry loaded guns in cases or my range bag.

Nah, you don't sound like ol' Bill.

Point taken. My guns have always been for defense first and pleasure second, so they tend to stay "in use" from the moment of acquisition until the time I choose to pass them on for others to enjoy.

Good post and good things for every gun owner to be careful of.

The NRA teaches (keep the gun unloaded until ready to use). As you will discover by taking some of their more advanced classes, ready to use ( in a defensive firearm context) means any time it is under your direct control to be used or carried for self defense.

Excellent article -- thanks for the read. Reading reminders is never a bad thing. Not surprisingly, I learned more gun safety and etiquette from my father than I ever did in the military.
