Hunting License
Suppose I'm out of state, and my uncle's legit for an in state hunting license.
We go hunting together, with (mine/his) gun and his hunting license/permits...
Can I shoot a deer on his license, say his gun ONLY if I'm accompanied by him?
Or should I apply for my own when the hunting season commences?
p.s Just have to shoot max 2 deer.

Re: Hunting License
Buy yourself a non-resident license.

Gun-crazy? Me? I'd say the gun-crazy ones are the ones that don’t HAVE one.

Re: Hunting License
If you are actively participating in the hunting activity, you must be licensed.
In the situation described, you need a non-resident license plus what ever additional licenses based on seasons/firearms/animal etc...

And if you're walking unarmed beside someone who is hunting, there ain't a Game Warden in the Old Dominion that won't haul your butt to jail for hunting without a license.

That'd be my advice.

Re: Hunting License
I recall there was some language in the DGIF rules, about you could as an unlicensed person accompany a hunter as an 'observer' but you needed a license if you assisted.birdshooter1 wrote:SO..... this means, I need a license, as well as the person accompanying me (be it he's unarmed but I am)
I can't find the citation right now, but if you want to be on the safe side, I'd get the license. They are way cheaper than having to fight the citation after the fact.

Re: Hunting License
I was wondering what an Apprentice Hunting License is, could any of you explain.
Also with reference to the dgif site (http://www.dgif.virginia.gov/hunting/re ... cense-fees) could any tell me what costs I shall incur to obtain a deer hunting license as an out of state resident.
I'm calculation the following;
. Non resident hunting license (what's this for BTW?) $111
. Non-resident Apprentice Hunting License (Whats this, and do I add it?) $21
. Non-resident Bear, Deer, Turkey License Valid July 1 through June 30 $86
Do I need all three?

Re: Hunting License
Its a 'introduce' someone to hunting license. Hopefully they enjoy the hobby, and take the hunter safety course, and get a full license in future years. The apprentice hunting license serves as a first-time Virginia resident or non-resident hunting license and is good for 2 years.
The license holder must be accompanied and directly supervised by a mentor over 18 who has on his or her person a valid Virginia hunting license. “Accompanied and directly supervised” occurs when a person over 18 maintains a close visual and verbal contact with, provides adequate direction to, and can immediately assume control of the firearm from the apprentice hunter.
The license entitles the holder to a onetime deferral of the hunter education requirement.
The apprentice license does not qualify the holder to purchase a regular hunting license, nor exempt the holder from compliance with Department regulations.
A bear, deer, turkey license and all applicable stamps or permits are required in addition to the apprentice license.
Previous Virginia resident and nonresident hunting license holders may not use an apprentice license.
A or B is the 'base' license and covers small game. C is needed to go after 'big game' (i.e. the named animals)A. Non resident hunting license (what's this for BTW?) $111
B. Non-resident Apprentice Hunting License (Whats this, and do I add it?) $21
C. Non-resident Bear, Deer, Turkey License Valid July 1 through June 30 $86

Re: Hunting License
Is it necessary to have a basic hunting license ALONG with a deer-turkey-bear one, or can I just buy the latter and hunt deer?
Ok guys, plz help me decide here.
Can the apprentice hunting license be used by someone 16 or older?
I'm confused. If I have an apprentice hunting license, and I'm accompanied by an uncle who has a proper hunting license, can I shoot deer in his company? He'll have an instate license, and I'll have an out of state apprentice. Do both of us need deer-bear-turkey licenses as well?
BTW SORRY FOR BOTHERING ALL OF YA, I'M IGNORANT... nonetheless, I'm learning and about to enter BIG GAME HUNTING.

Re: Hunting License
YES you need both.birdshooter1 wrote:Is it necessary to have a basic hunting license ALONG with a deer-turkey-bear one, or can I just buy the latter and hunt deer?
if you are going out during the special archery/muzzleloader seasons you need an ADDITIONAL license for that too.

Yes. but as said above:I'm confused. If I have an apprentice hunting license, and I'm accompanied by an uncle who has a proper hunting license, can I shoot deer in his company? He'll have an instate license, and I'll have an out of state apprentice.
Which means he needs to be within about 3-5 FEET of you at all times.maintains a close visual and verbal contact with, provides adequate direction to, and can immediately assume control of the firearm from the apprentice hunter

VA DGIF puts out a PDF of the rules/regs, seasons, license requirements etc... ALL the questions you've asked are answered in there. Please download and read, there are even more things in there that you should know, its a good read.BTW SORRY FOR BOTHERING ALL OF YA, I'M IGNORANT... nonetheless, I'm learning and about to enter BIG GAME HUNTING.
