Recycling... a survival technique.

Post by Reverenddel »

Lately, we've been discussing recycling, and not the "green bin" on the street type, but finding uses for stuff around the house...

The "Depression/WWII" era folk were MASTERS at this technique!

Trying to get ideas about what can serve multiple purposes. I know that 20oz drink bottles cut in half work well as seedling starters. That empty kool-aid containers are dishwasher safe, and work well for transporting dry cereal for camping in small "crushproof" containers.

Any other ideas?

We've known for years out here in the hills that empty milk jugs are good for storing leftover corn, which we first recycle into a beverage.

My dad and I used to fish with empty milk jugs.... you tie the fishing line and hook around the empty milk jug and throw it our as a large bobber. =)

if you are going to be planting seed, you can recycle your trash as compost! My parents do this and have an incredible garden. Neighborhood hate the smell though and it sure does attract the critters.

An old guy that used to work with my dad had a saying,

"Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."

Those guys don't waste. Most of us (those born after WW2) have never had it as rough as our parents/grandparents that lived through the depression and WW2.

We have (most of us) lost so many of the skills and much of the knowledge that help people survive in those times.
