Plinking on State land?

I searched and I found a couple old threads that said, you're only allowed to shoot while you're hunting or only on authorized WMA ranges. I wanted to make this thread to make sure this was still the case.

Before moving to Virginia I was excited that I could possibly have more chances to take out my steel targets and go plink on state land. In Michigan, anywhere you're allowed to hunt, you're allowed to shoot/plink. I would think that since Virginia has so much undeveloped land and wilderness there would be more space available here than in the Lower peninsula of Michigan.

Quite a bit of VA public land, is national/State forest. Firearms discharge on National forests, is on established ranges only. Likewise State Forests, target shooting of all kind is prohibited, unless its hunting, and during an open season.

Access to places to go shoot on your own to a public land and shoot at random in the woods, is non-existent here in VA.

If you want to shoot, buy land, or use a public use range.

Can one shoot a rimfire in his backyard if he lives in the suburbs of va beach (off course if neighbors don't mind)?
Where in Va beach can one shoot his big bore rifles like the Mosin and what's the max range provided there?
Also are there shotgun skeet/trap ranges in va beach?

It will come down to local county/town/HOA ordinances/rules. I'd call the local LEO's and ask.

I would expect that if you are not in a A - Agriculture zoning it is highly unlikely you will be permitted to discharge a non-air gun.

VA recently pre-empted local laws regarding air gun discharge, as long as you contain the projectiles. So I would expect you can target shoot with the air gun.

The other thing you usually run into even if discharge IS permitted are noise regulations. In residential areas I would expect 80 DB or less at the property line is the regulation. So even a SUPRESSED .22 is likely to be above 80 within 50-75 feet or so.

northeastwardly along New Bridge
Road; thence eastwardly along Sandbridge
Road to the Atlantic Ocean, or
across any land north of False Cape Park
and east of Shipps Bay and Point Creek.
No discharge of rifles larger than .22
south of this line except muzzleloading
rifles may be used to hunt deer during
the firearms deer season.
