"Trayvon targets" - hmmm

The outrage over the "Trayvon Targets" is growing and now change.org has a petition out calling for Virginia's Attorney General to take action against the Hiller Armament Co. for selling Trayvon Martin gun targets.

The Hiller Co., supporters of George Zimmerman, reportedly sold out the targets made in the likeness of the slain teen, complete with Skittles, iced tea and hoodie, in two days.

To add to this reprehensible exploitation of Trayvon, the gun range company also said on their site that not only was Zimmerman innocent but that he "shot a thug," when he put a bullet through the chest of the unarmed 17-year-old high-schooler on the night of Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla., as he was walking home from the neighborhood 7-Eleven.

Change.org wants the State of Virginia to do something about Hiller profiting from this tragedy; they say it is not only "vile" but "illegal." Below is part of the email change.org sent out:
It is utterly vile AND potentially illegal. Virginia law "Prohibits the unauthorized use of a person's name, portrait or picture for advertising or trade purposes. The right continues for 20 years after death."

Seems to be pretty insensitive to me, and I'm not interested in buying any.

That said, I can't seem to locate any place other than these reports where they are called "Trayvon targets". Also, they don't fall into the legalities that were identified, as this is not a "portrait or picture" of Trayvon. Change.org needs to find something else to complain about in my opinion.

Unhelpful is the word I would use. Feel free to shoot it, but I would not.

The world is full of stupid.

Here's hoping few worship it by buying them.

I don't see his name on it, either. So the legal threat may well be an empty one. And if it's not a crime, then I guess it can't be a hate crime. But it is damn sure hateful.

I agree it is a reprehensible thing to do. AND it will be used to reflect discredit on gun owners and those who legally carry them by all the folks that always seize every opportunity to do so. And I'd have to say that making and selling (or using) these targets does make something of a case that the maker/seller/user may well lack the discretion and judgment one ought to have to carry a firearm. I reckon the internet's mass communication and marketing capabilities makes it too easy for an idiot to show his @ss to the whole cotton-pickin' world.

There probably isn't much of a legal case against them but I agree it is pretty tasteless.

Oh I'm so ordering some because the point of fact is he was a thug! He was acting suspicious in a neighborhood and assaulted the guy that shot him. Oh wait the news conveniently left that out.

That's one dead and too many more to go!

While I personally wouldn't use them, I don't think they should be prohibited from being sold.

Oh, I agree with that. Stupid's not a crime. It never will be. Too many politicians depend on it for a living. And either the government nor anybody else has any business sticking their noses into personal expression - no matter how stupid or offensive. Si I agree. I have to.

Offensive? All I see in these targets are shadowy figures in a hoodie with something that might be a weapon, are you saying you would shoot someone attacking you? The guy was shot because he attacked the guy that shot him, simple.

I'd say that the use of "Skittles" on the target kinda personalizes it a bit.

Here are some good targets if you don't want the Trayvon targets :)

Agree with the Tacky comment. Let them make all they want, no one has to buy them. Free enterprise can usually eliminate the stupid ideas

The only thing next to putting martins name on there that would make it more obvious is putting "for use with KelTec PF9 only" on it somewhere. They can make all they want but they won't be getting my business. I prefer to shoot steel anyway :)

I agree that from what I've heard and read that it looks like Trayvon was the aggressor at the time of the shooting. If Zimmermann was imprudent in placing himself in a position where Trayvon COULD attack him, that may or may not reduce the effectiveness of Zimmermann's plea of self-defense depending (at the very least) upon exactly what the law is in Florida and how well the attorneys on each side do their jobs.

But whether the target is offensive has nothing to do with whether it was Trayvon or Zimmermann who was more culpable. It has to do with the way it makes the general public perceive those who make and use them. It has to do with having the bad manners and bad judgment to rub salt in a raw wound. It has to do with aggravating racial anger and resentment; whether or not that anger and resentment is justified by the circumstances. My pappy, in one of his earthier dispensations of sage fatherly counsel, once advised me that if you happened to step in “IT”, the thing to do was step out, shake it off the best you could, and move on; because the more you stir “IT” the more it stinks. These guys with the Trayvon targets are, in my opinion, stirring “IT” pretty hard.

Chiming in... There is a medical report showing ZIMMERMAN got his BUTT KICKED before the incident, that actually made the NEWS today.

http://news.yahoo.com/abc-news-exclusiv ... ories.html

I didn't hear anyone who was THREATENING ZIMMERMAN apologize, or say "We were wrong". Hello? PRESIDENT OBAMA?! YOU GONNA APOLOGIZE?!?! Just asking.

Yeah. Everytime I hear a mother on tv saying "He/she is a good boy/girl."

I remember Jeffery Dahmer's Mom said the SAME DAMNED THING!
