Carroll Shelby, a Texas chicken farmer turned hot-rodder who went on to build innovative sports cars like the Cobra that challenged Europe’s longtime dominance of road racing, as well as high-performance versions of production cars like the Ford Mustang, died on Thursday in Dallas. He was 89.
The automotive industry and the entire world will always be a better place because of Carroll Shelby. Calling Shelby a legend is like saying that Ford has sold a few Mustangs.
To say Carroll Shelby was a gifted man would be inaccurate. From a bed ridden childhood to a race-car driver, then builder and then create multiple iconic automobiles. It was his hard work dedication and devotion that made him the man he was. If ever there was a true story that I wish Hollywood would make, this would be it. He could turn anything into a race-car, from a little unreliable British import, the early underpowered mustangs to a lowly front wheel drive that was a first cousin to the original minivan. Carroll Shelby made them fast and fun, and with his partnerships with Ford, the Chrysler and back to Ford, he made them so anybody could drive one...
You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?
