it's confusing that some ranges require a background check or current chp for membership, but not for non-members just coming in for a casual range session.

The reason you give your CHP number is because, at the bottom of the membership application you can either sign or give them your CHP number. By signing you are giving your permission to a federal background check since you will be a member. If you give them your CHP, they do not find it necessary to run a background check on you. If the government gives you a CHP card, you have already gone through a federal background check and if you haven't had it taken away then you do not need to be checked. Also, they advise people not to unload the concealed carry weapon in the parking lot. There is a safe room in the building in which you can unload your weapon. You do not have to unload it unless you plan on shooting that weapon. I assume this is a safety precaution? I joined last week and love it.

I'll restate...
Why do they need a chp or permission for a bg check *for membership*, yet I can walk in as a non-member just to shoot for their hourly, public rate and not be required to undergo any check of bg or chp?

A non Memeber or person who shoots for an hour still signs the same waiver members do and if yhe range officer suspects a problem...they can run a quick check...it is more of a "just in case"....safety issue for most of the newer ranges, an actual check is rarely run on anyone...

Okay, They won me over.

CSA has hired the most educated gun folk from about 4 gun stores in the area. Guys whom I have known for over 25 years... Their prices are competitive, they are building it to be comfortable for women shooters, and they're making an effort, which is more than some of the local shops!

Women are the key role in future gun sports guys! They are the ones who are going to expand our rights, and make sure the next generation is comfortable with a firearm around.

I haven't shot there, but $100 initiation, and $34 a month isn't awful, when I can bring my own ammo, and my own weapon, and just use their facility to practice with a .22LR.

As to the background checks, and all that other sorted info? Two words: "INSURANCE LIABILITY", nothing to do with laws, or LEO's, All to do with the insurance requirements.

The problem with that is they have stated they ONLY (allegedly) run them if they think something is iffy, so if there not in the practice of actively running people, it's not an insurance thing. It's Data Mining.

What does "iffy" look like? Does "iffy" wear a particular type of t-shirt? So that it's easy to identify.

Cho didn't look "iffy", neither did David Purdy, or a multitude of others. The only "iffy" people would be those dressed as "gang" members, or "rough" looking characters, and i have a white-collar job, but when I have a field assignment, I look "iffy".

You cannot ID mental defects by "Iffy" appearances. Or those with restraining orders for domestic abuse.

I'm not agreeing with their stupid policy. Only reason I gave them their info is because I was sick of getting raped at Dominion. As I said, data mining.

My brother and I took some time to visit CSA earlier this week while running an errand near their location. The staff we spoke with seemed very friendly and helpful but our time was somewhat limited and we didn't have much time to talk. We were welcomed to look and walk around and found the facility very clean. We rented a couple of lanes for an hour of shooting and went through the safety video and verbal safety quiz as we were filling out the liability form. We were given cards, good for a year, stating we had received the safety briefing. The range was clean, well maintained and well ventilated. The RSO was very friendly and helpful. The store is well stocked and ammunition prices are reasonable, at least in the calibers I shoot.

I'm on the fence about membership as I'm not sure about the frequency I'll be able to shoot.

I just wanted to put in a good word for Colonial Shooting Academy. Went there the other day and brought along a guest. Once again I was treated with respect, and personal attention. My guest was helped thoroughly and efficiently. The lanes were pretty crowded but the safety officer did a great job helping out, cleaning up, correcting mistakes and being generally friendly.

Even though the place was a madhouse, they kept composure and remained professional at all times. I hope their membership numbers are doing well, I like what I am seeing and hope to see more of it.

Ammo prices are going up a little though, but I guess you cant have it all.
