Yer too young to understand this, kid, but the Rev was posting CARB PORN about the only pleasures of the flesh us older folks can still (at least until The Big One gets us) stand up to doing non-stop. (We can still do the other stuff you think of as porn, but just not non-stop) As such, he's an insidious influence on weak-willed folks like me who'll drop his inhibitions and eat a snickerdoodle at the drop of a hat; and it'd serve him right if the Food Nazis took him away in a black SUV and gave him a celery-juice enema or something.

Re: Do you ever just have one of those days?
Rev,
I have hope for you! My mom can't eat any wheat or dairy, my father in law has diabetes 2. So when i cook for them i have had to learn to work around it. On the biscuits and gravy, look for gluten free biscuit mix. It will have less carbs. On the gravy. You can do two things the first being a chicken broth reduction sauce (read cook it and boil the water out of it and it will thicken that way), or you can use arrowroot instead of flour to thicken the sauce. If you really want something there is always a work around, it may not be perfection, but I can usually get pretty close to whatsoever my family craves but can't typically have.
Now I am not a doctor nor do I play one on tv, but it seems to me that if the statins are making you sick and you felt fine before I would get some additional advice. Talk with a nutritionist, or a naturopath, or another cardiologist.
Good luck. If you want specific work arounds email me and I will look some stuff up.

Re: Do you ever just have one of those days?
I bluntly called the Cardiologist after talking with five different nurses in different fields, and told them about the statins. They all said "Whoa, uh... call your doctor NOW!"
"...arrowroot instead of flour to thicken the sauce..." Thought about that, but it has the same carb levels as potatoes, which I cannot have.
Oh no... Trust me, my "food porn"? That's Sara Jean Underwood with Biscuits as patsies, and a piece of ukrops cake for a thong, and ice cream in one hand, and gravy craddled in another.
Oh... (drools) I'm goin' ta' foodhell.

Re: Do you ever just have one of those days?
I think I have been on all the statins... Liptor, Crestor, etc., and they all gave me muscle aching problems. My regular doc is a little old school and has changed me to an older drug called Colestipol, which he says is a binder that works in the stomach/intestines to block the bad stuff from being absorbed. It seems to be working, because my cardiologist has stopped beating me up about not taking statins, once he saw my fasting blood work.Reverenddel wrote:and told them about the statins. Re: Do you ever just have one of those days?
Hmmmmm.....well I have never tried other "flours" as thickeners. Coconut flour has 8 grams of carbs in 2 tbs,, beans are carbs too, but they may not effect you blood sugar as much as white flour you could either mash up a can and use it or try some bean flour. Chia seeds can be used as a gelling agent and they are mostly fiber, though they have a tapiopca like texture--so that would be like lumpy gravy. Then again you have the reduction sauce as well or you could add gelatin and then cool it slightly. Just trying to help a hungry man out.

Spelt flour makes good gravy and is gluten free. Don't know about the carbs though.

Carbs, salt, fat, and sugar are all gonna be banned.
Only organically grown lettuce with high self-esteem and abandonment issues will be allowed.
Problem solved. You are welcome.
Re: Do you ever just have one of those days?
I've had a few decades that have seemed like a never-ending "one of those days..." To cope, it sometimes helps me to fantasize about all the indulgences described earlier in this thread and to try adding additional fantasies involving the Miller Girl parachute squad and Reba McEntire with a shotgun AND a bolt action rifle, like in the movie "Tremors"... all at the same time of course. Try to hang in there. Tax time will be over soon.

Mama, I do appreciate it greatly! I thank you for your suggestions, and will research them.
Also, I had no idea they had ALTERNATIVES to "Statins", but you'd think the jackwagon would say "Hey! Diabetes, let's NOT give something that ELEVATES Blood glucose!"
But I digress, most "Specialists" only see their "Specialty" as the solution. IE: Miltary sees war, diplomat sees conversation, and Congress sees my wallet.

Re: Do you ever just have one of those days?
Not only did the statins do me in, but my doc also says that Zetia (which was supposed to be different than statins, and avoid those side effect issues) is just as bad for much of the population. The Colestipol I mentioned is listed as Colestid on this web page. My doc has me on the Colestid and Niacin.Reverenddel wrote:Also, I had no idea they had ALTERNATIVES to "Statins"...

There were a whole class of drugs used for reducing gall stones, kidney stones, etc., because they all form from the same goo (note the highly technical medical lingo here) before blood cholesterol became the cause of the day (or decade?). Like I said, my doc is old-school!!
Re: Do you ever just have one of those days?
Not saying YOU should do it but I basicly told my doctor ENOUGH about 5 years ago. Every month it was a different statin or diabetes drug. I haven't taken anything since then and feel so much better.

My wife is an alcoholic. She's been drinking half a bottle of Vodka almost every day since she lost her job in December. Last night, I gave her an ultimatum. Go to rehab, or we're leaving. She stayed home.
Re: Do you ever just have one of those days?
One of those days is always the best!! On saturday I managed to break my ak, run into a tree in my new sedan and my break lines went out going down a mountain in my truck!!! Members on another site can verify all of this... But I still made the best of it!!

One very sick kiddo (103 fever), two minority sick kids (sniffles, tummy aches). We are desperately trying to move beyond lesson 75 in our curriculum-- rough days for sure.

I didn't want to go on statins, and my doc put me on Niacin. Old-fashioned, but it worked - somewhat. But my problem was, at that time, marginal.
