Steel Pistol Match at Black Creek
Steel Pistol Match at Black Creek
I shot the all steel pistol match yesterday at Black Creek in Mechanicsville, VA. It has been several months since I shot this match and I had almost forgotten how much I really like it. I shoot some IDPA and USPSA too, but the steel match at Black has always been and remains my favorite.
For all you competition pistol shooters or those thinking about giving it a try that live near Richmond or are willing to travel there, I strongly recommend giving the steel match at Black Creek a try. It's only $20, you don't have to be a member of anything, and it's lots of fun.

I think I'm going to give it a try if I can keep my schedule clear for April 14th.
Re: Steel Pistol Match at Black Creek
Super, I plan to make that one too. Bring plenty of ammo - the round counts listed are only if you don't miss any targets with one shot - I don't think even Todd Jarrett ever shot this match clean.meak99 wrote:I think I'm going to give it a try if I can keep my schedule clear for April 14th.

I'll bring my 1911, a bunch of mags and several hundred rounds. Right now, looks like I can make it. SWMBO has been informed, so hopefully nothing else gets planned. Anything else besides eyes/ears I need to bring?
Re: Steel Pistol Match at Black Creek
I think you have it pretty well covered Matt. Lots of belt mag carriers too if you have them. And If you have not already done so, I recommend you take a look at the tabs at the top of the page on the Black Creek Steel Web site - they have some good info. If you have any questions, please feel ask me or send me a PM.meak99 wrote:I'll bring my 1911, a bunch of mags and several hundred rounds. Right now, looks like I can make it. They shoot by squads at this match; if you would like to shoot with me we can link up at registration. I got one of my neighbors to go with me yesterday, he is a new-to-competition shooter and had not shot steel before - he had a blast!

Mag pouches.... check.
The only competition I've done thus far is bowling pins & 8" round steel plates, 10-15 yards; the Hatfield's matches up at Fairfax Rod & Gun. I'll take a better look at the Black Creek website. I'd be glad to shoot in the same squad if I make it.
What kind of distances are most of the targets in these matches? Time to start practicing more...

Re: Steel Pistol Match at Black Creek
Most targets are in the 12 to 15 yard range. Some targets will occasionally be out to 20 yards or more, but this is not too common. Drawing from a holster, reloading and sometimes shooting while moving, shooting from different locations or positions, and occasionally being required to shoot one handed with either the strong or weak hand are probably the main differences.meak99 wrote:Mag pouches.... check.

Here is a video to give a flavor:
If she looks pretty good, it's because she is the USPSA's Woman's Open National Champion.

How many shoot rimfire? What about rimfire rifle?

The last time I checked, they had a rimfire division. It's on the web-site.Jakeiscrazy wrote:How many shoot rimfire? What about rimfire rifle?
Re: Steel Pistol Match at Black Creek
On the Web site, under the about tab, there is reply from a couple of months ago stating that the rifle and shotgun divisions were not active now.
I've only once seen a shooter with a rimfire pistol - he was a super-senior shooter and the .22 rimfire did not have enough power to knock down many of the falling steel targets. The Range Officer had to call out hits on these targets. I don't know if Black Creek match honchos made a special provision to allow him to shoot a rimfire pistol or not.

Thanks, I think I may have asked that once before. I'll have to borrow a friends gun.Chasbo00 wrote:On the Web site, under the about tab, there is reply from a couple of months ago stating that the rifle and shotgun divisions were not active now.

I'm in for tomorrow - anyone else definitely going?
Re: Steel Pistol Match at Black Creek
I'll be there along with my neighbor. I'm expecting a strong turnout, maybe close to 100 or so.

A big thanks to Charlie for showing me around, and making sure I knew what to do and when to do it. This was a really fun match - I highly recommend more folks come out and give it a try! Very wide range of shooters there - from young to old, race guns to revolvers, mostly men but a few women - it was all about having a safe, fun, shooting experience!

Re: Steel Pistol Match at Black Creek
Thanks Matt. You did that 1911 of yours proud - great shooting. Those of you thinking about shooting a match should consider this one. Super nice folks who truly welcome new shooters, all steel targets that are tons of fun, and you don't have to be a member of anything. Give it a try - you will be glad you did.

..I started with Nothing, and still have most of it left
Re: Steel Pistol Match at Black Creek
Hi Greg; unfortunately I can't make the steel match on the 12th. I've got SO duty at Fairfax Rod and Gun's IDPA match. Sorry, I'm going to miss seeing you again and meeting your son. I think Matt (meak99) will be there though. Have a great time - it's really a fun match. We'll link up again soon I'm sure, perhaps at a USPSA match or future steel match.gregj wrote:Hey Charles , Looks like my son and I will be going there the 12th.
