can an active Military guy stationed in VA get a ccw?

Post by ktownking »

Hi guys, I'm hoping you can answer a question for me.

I'm active duty Navy, I have a ccw for CA (no reciprocity here), I'm an AZ resident but I'm stationed here in VA. If I do the VA ccw class, can I get my permit here like I did in CA? How long does it take? Cost? Thanks guys.

hey ktown, first off, thank you for your service.
if you click on the VA CHP Info link in the left margin of this page, it will show you what the requirements are.
Active military are eligible, you just need to apply in the city or county in which you reside. i believe most areas must issue within 45 days, but most take less than that.
Good luck.

yes you can. i think i may have heard that you need to show your duty orders to show being stationed in va, but don't quote me.

have a look here: http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504 ... d+18.2-308
for our cc statutes. section D starts the chp part. section G talks about the safety class requirement. per G5, you may not even need the class.

by statute, the circuit "shall issue" in 45 days, maximum, unless denied for cause. depending on where you are, it can take anywhere from 2 weeks to the full 45 days. there are processes in place to 'pressure' circuits that drag their feet beyond that, if they don't follow statute and certify your app as a temporary permit.

cost is also governed by statute at $50, maximum. some circuits are less, though. the range is $15 to $50.

finally, some circuits require fingerprints for first-time applications, while others do not. that requirement was repealed in the legislature this year and should go into effect on july 1.

hth.

the circuit court clerk's office in the county or city where you live is where you file the app and pay. most often they have the app, but you can also get it from the va state police website here: http://www.vsp.state.va.us/downloads/SP ... 1-2011.pdf

If you need some help let me know. I got my CCW here (also Navy and out of state resident) and it was a quick process. The hardest part was going to the bank to get the money order. Are you located in the Hampton Roads area?

I will be in the Hampton roads area, but not until July. For now I'm up near Fredericksburg. I will be shooting you a pm anyway though buddy, I don't know anyone in your area, so it will be cool to meet a shooting buddy.
