Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag *new*

Post by fuze »

Never fired brand new shotgun, just brought this one home today for the upcoming Spring Gobbler season :machinegun: Ok, that was what I told myself atleast, I just needed an excuse to buy another gun.

I need to order a modified choke tube from Mossberg still before I can pattern any buckshot, but the Ultra Full should do just fine come turkey season :) I am hoping to get out this weekend to pattern that Ulti-Full choke it came with.

She takes anything up to 3 1/2in shells, no slugs.

About the stock. I had never owned a gun with the hole in the stock until now. I find it UGLY as all get out, but I do like how it feels and am excited to get out and do some shooting with it. It fits me well.

That does look weird on a shotgun.

Mossberg "overbores" their 835 line to 10gauge and then back down to 12gauge. I can only guess that a slug would not like all the wiggle room in the middle of the barrel.

I put about 100 shells through it this past weekend of varying shot and shell sizes. She did great. The 3 1/2'ers kick real nice. :ak47:

I've got a new modified choke on it now from Carlson's that will shoot buckshot, steel, etc.. Will use the Ulti-Full choke come gobbler time, and a camo sock.

Very nice shotgun. I didn't know about overbore, but I guess that has a purpose. Got me curious and I looked to see if they have interchangeable barrels and it seems they do. Actually, I'm thinking about getting a Mossberg or Remmy shotgun next year and might want one with interchangeable barrels.

With a slug barrel and the right slugs that would hit deer at 100 yds with 1600 - 1800 Lb ft of energy. Not shabby at all!

Yes sir, slug barrel are available :) I borrowed a family member's Mossberg 835 for a hunt earlier this year and I was sold on one after that. The owner took a turkey at 64yards last year with their's.

The purpose of the overbore is to supposedly give a tighter pattern, which I believe after shooting a few. I have owned an 870 since a kid, and shot Stevens, Ithacas, etc and this one is a real performer in the field.

Here is the one that dropped the turkey at 64yards on range finder, and I had a successful day with it as well. I would have went with the camo finish but didn't feel like paying the extra money atm. I have something else in the works.

Thanks for the info on overbore. I had wondered before what that term meant for a shotgun. That is a nice pair of birds - guess they wound up in the oven!

My smooth bore barrel is pretty accurate out to 50 yards so I def. think a rifled barrel would be accurate out to 100 yards easy.

The overbore, or backbone, sounds similar to the vang comp mod: https://vangcomp.com/

The backbone the barrel as well but they say slugs still work fine.

Mine is a smooth bore Turkey model, 20in barrel with adjustable trigger. The barrel says no slugs, so I won't push my luck :)
